FW 18.25: Target Threshold Zone daily suggested workouts to high

I reduced my FTP from 200 to 180 Watt because Garmin recognized it as too high, but the goals in the daily suggested workouts
are still far too high for threshold training.

4x7:00@210W 1:10:00 Threshold Training is impossible for me, when i have an FTP of 180W,
so the Trainings are useless for me

  • Yes, suggested workouts ignore your FTP setting and use hidden Garmin magic do determine targets. It often results in nonsense. Nobody outside of Garmin really knows how those estimates are determined from your random activities, but most people think they are somehow derived from your VO2Max estimate. And in practice those magical estimates can't compete with a well-established FTP test that is using a well-defined protocol in a controlled environment. In my case the targets are actually too low. Others reported similar problems.

The best workaround we could come up with so far is to keep a library of manually created workouts (like Threshold 4x7 in your case) and use those according to the workout suggestion, just with correct zone-based targets. Yes, it's dumb, but because there are only few variations of suggested workouts, it's easy to quickly pick and maybe adapt a template workout. I am using suggested workouts and this approach for my summer months when I want more fun rides and less structure, but I will probably switch to a regular plan (I recommend Tacx plans) or TrainerRoad for the winter.
