After updating my 1040 recently (currently v18.23), it won't boot up after syncing with Garmin Express. It locks up on the boot up screen. I have to hold the power button 15 seconds to get it to turn on. Anyone else?

How do GPX files “work better for navigation”?
=====================
It doesn’t really matter which (FIT, TCX, or GPX) you use. These all contain the same track data. They all behave exactly…
I have had this happen as well, no new files, just plugged into my Mac - synced with garmin express, let it fully charge, eject and unplug.
Edge 1040 solar on 18.23 just froze on 'loading courses and maps…
Exact same symptoms here, after every disconnection from the computer it locks up on booting.
Is this problem solved for anybody?
Can you please share a solution then?
I see the same issue since update to FW 18.xx on Edge 1040 non-solor.
Some more details, that might not have been mentioned yet:
- the issue occurs not always, but maybe 90% of the time after disconnecting the Device from my Windows PC
- it doesn't matter, whether I savely disconnect the HW from the OS or whether I just unplug it
- it doesn't matter, whether I actively access the device (say by Garmin express or by the Windows File Explorer) or whether I just plug it in for loading the battery. Garmin express is not always running in the background of my computer.
- After disconnecting with the tray area icon, the device seems to restart, is showing the "loading courses ..." screen, and then gets stuck at one of the following screens, often the one that shows the text "Worldwide Autoroute ...". But sometimes, it gets one message further. As noted before, rarely it boots up correctly.
- Fortunately, pressing power for 10-15 seconds and then normal press always is succeeding. Never missed any data, i.e. freshly transferred courses be basecamp or by Windows file explorer
Reading all the change logs of new firmware versions with "fixed several problems", I had hoped, that this problem went away. But it is still there with just released 20.19.
Not sure, if there are different HW reversions of the 1040. I bought mine just at start of selling in Germany, June 2022, so it should be the first revision.
Any help will be appreciated. I would hate, to factory reset the device.

Not much help perhaps but I have never, in the 18 months I have had the 1040, seen the issue you describe. I have seen a few odd behaviours and a “factory reset” has always resolved them. The recovery / restore from the last GCM sync is much better than previously especially restoring profile setup, at most you might have to manually reconfigure Wifi & phone connections and CIQ apps / fields. Less time than typing this.
J'ai toujours ce problème, certainement un problème matériel
I am also affected. By now I am pretty much used to the fact that after using a USB cable my Edge 1040 will be stuck in the "Loading workouts, courses, whatever" step for a long time. Or at least until I lose my patience and hard reboot it by holding the power button. I hardly ever use courses, but maybe my workouts (I have a mix of Garmin Connect, TrainerRoad, created on the device itself and side loaded from the computer workouts) clogged something :-)
Not excited about resetting my device, but I will probably need to do it t some point. For now, I naively hope that Garmin can actually find the bug and fix it ;-)
This was also a problem with the older 1030, which was never fixed to this day, the problem was too many files in the devices new files folder, the work around was not to have too many strava segments starred in strava. If you had then you'd have to hook up via USB, go into the devices new files folder and delete all the files. I have noticed since having very few strava segment also made the 1040 boot up ok after being disconnected from usb although the 1040 boot up is not connected to the new files issue of the 1030.
How many is too many? I'm having this problem and I only have 9 starred segments.
9 shouldn't be a problem, on the 1030 it was the amount of files in the new files folder, but it's not on the 1040, since the 20.xx updates, my 1040 has been booting up ok via usb, I presumed the problem had been fixed. What firmware are you running, is it up to date? think it's on 21.xx firmware now. I don't work for Garmin by the way.
Mine has been ok from a firmware update about a month or so ago.
I've only got 20.19. I haven't been offered a further update.
Sorry, just checked the latest firmware is 20.19
