1040 Boot Up

After updating my 1040 recently (currently v18.23), it won't boot up after syncing with Garmin Express.  It locks up on the boot up screen.  I have to hold the power button 15 seconds to get it to turn on.  Anyone else?

  • Connect the Edge to a computer and check the \Garmin\Newfiles directory. The device loads (fit)files from this directory at boot. There might be files with a size of 0 bytes.

  • Since 18.23, TWICE now, my 1040 freezes during boot. This always (and only) occurs right after I connect my 1040 to my laptop (via USB) and copy one or more .GPX files to the NewFiles folder. Hold the power button for 10 seconds and the unit reboots successfully.   But this never happened prior to 18.23. The courses that I copied to the NewFiles folder do appear properly on the Save Courses section.

  • Where are you getting the gpx files from? Can you sync from that source direct via Garmin Connect instead? It's a lot less hassle and maybe a workaround if this is a new bug until it gets fixed.

  • I download my GPX files from RideWithGPS because I don't want the FIT files on my GPS. GPX files work far better for navigation. It also hung when I installed some European maps.

  • ????

How do GPX files “work better for navigation”?

    =====================

It doesn’t really matter which (FIT, TCX, or GPX) you use. These all contain the same track data. They all behave exactly the same. Other than “course points”.

FIT and TCX can contain “course points” (these are not a GPX thing). You can turn off the use of “course points” on the device. I could see someone using GPX to disable “course points” but that would be the only thing different with using GPX.

???? The Edge converts the GPX (and TCX) files to FIT. FIT is the native/default file format on the Edges.

  • Never had a problem - didn't even know that back-end sync produces a FIT file. I always used TCX when I was doing it manually in the past and it seemed to work better for nav than GPX but that was on older devices so can't fairly compare, but my navigation on the 1030+ and 1040 works great doing it this way. I have EU West maps with EU central and east and NA disabled.

Again, all three formats have the same exact track information. They all work exactly the same. This is the case for “older devices” too.

FIT and TCX can have “course points”. These are extra data (in addition to the track points). These don’t effect navigation at all (they just show up in a list and pop-up when you arrive at them ).

Garmin converts TCX and GPX into FIT anyway. So, you are always using FIT anyway. It might be a bit faster processing FIT files (since they really don’t have to be converted). FIT is the native/default file format on the Edges.

Since FIT files are smaller than TCX or GPX for the same information, they download faster (especially over BT).

The maps have nothing to do with processing the files in NewFiles.

  • I have had this happen as well, no new files, just plugged into my Mac - synced with garmin express, let it fully charge, eject and unplug.

Edge 1040 solar on 18.23 just froze on 'loading courses and maps'. Waited 5 minutes and was still stuck. Had to force power off then re-turn on the device.  At that point it started in like 5 seconds.

  • Exact same symptoms here, after every disconnection from the computer it locks up on booting.

  • Updating to 18.25 may solve this, in the changelog there is mentioned "Fixed issue that could cause a bootloop".
