My Edge 1040 Solar keeps crashing while in use

Good afternoon,

I have been using my Edge 1040 Solar since July 2022, and never had any issue. I usually performed all the FW upgrades regularly and the same on Gamrin Connect iOS.

All the problems started mid July this year, where the edge is constantly crashing while in use, basically yiou can start a ride successfully and randomly the screen freezes and the unit become unresponsive for several minutes untill it reboots by itself. After the reboot the screen is showing uo the active ride which is in paused status so I have to manually resume it.

This issue can happen several time even during a 2/3 hours ride, it seems that the unit is loosing also the connection to Garmin Connect app while this is happening.

This started with firmware 17.xx versions and I have updated now to 18.23 - with the same problem.

Would anyone know what could be the root cause? How to fix it?

I haven't perfromed any reset as yet.

thanks

Marco

  • Restore the device to factory settings. Will not help - RMA

  • You mean the unit must be replaced with Garmin support?

  • Hello,

Are you using IQ fields ? Don't know if IQ fields are sandboxed or can crash the system, but can be a start to look at this.
Next, I would say I would go the painfull way, save what you can and factory reset the device. At least you will be sure if it's more software or hardware related.

    Cheers

  • Yes, I am using few IQ fields, for a long time and never had problems.

What's the best way to back up the Edge before the factory reset? Should I also intervene on the GAmrin Connect app?

    thanks

  • Don't want to give you wrong advices because I've never tried to reset and restore settings.
Looking at filesystem, I would say you can backup
    - Activities
    - Courses
    - Settings/Settings.fit
    ...
But better wait for somebody who already tried that Smiley

  • Start with backup settings/records/etc -> https://support.garmin.com/en-MY/?faq=eWswdSH4aC3xrXxmQj7U9A

Reset to default. Dont install IQ apps, ride. If everything is ok, then start adding the IQ applications you use.

But - if the device still reboots without any additional IQ applications after restoring it to factory settings - then yes, contact Garmin support to replace the device.

  • Thanks a mill - will do it and keep you posted

  • Same here, edge 1040, it hapens on every single ride after firmware 17.xx  and onwards,it happened yesterday on a 62km ride, sudden reboot, back to active ride with ride data not lost, and comes back to life paused, have to press start/stop button to continue.

    Very annoying

I do not have any IQ apps installed, and i have three times return to factory default, all erased.

  • HI, good to know I am not the only one experiencing this...so you are saying that even removing all the IQ apps and returning to factory default did not help? Have you engaged with the support for a potential RMA of the unit? What did they suggest you to do? Thanks

  • I would contact support as your problem is unacceptable , they will suggest a reset because it’s a sort of cure all when they don’t know, the syncing to mobile connect is actually quite good and restores most things, a few setting will be missed but your profiles and sensors should be near complete. To get a replacement if it is needed you have to start with support anyway so better to get started. Hopefully a reset will fix it, the quality of Garmin coding is not great leading to lots of “issues”
