Does 18.23 fix the automatic setting of the wrong elevation at the start of each ride?

Does the 18.23 software fix the problem of the unit automatically setting the incorrect elevation once starting a ride?  I’ve been asking customer support for a fix, but they have not been able to do anything.  Presumably it’s a bug, but I don’t see it listed among the fixes.  Does anyone know?  Hoping to hear from someone who has been lucky enough to already get the new software (which as per usual seems to have been made available to a select few owners only.). Thanks!

  • seems to have been made available to a select few owners only

It claims to be “Live at (100%) as of 8/31/23 ?”

  • They always lie.  It’s a habit.  Anyway, curious if this bug is fixed when the software arrives sometime in the next 2 months or so.

  • The initial elevation can come from one of to sources, if the unit is set to auto-calibrate.

It will use the DEM data associate with the GPS position.

If you are starting near a saved location then it will take the elevation data associated with the saved location and not the DEM data.

If you are starting an activity near a saved location I would check the elevation value associated with that.

  • I am the least special rider on this forum but I get all versions within minutes of availability, maybe it’s my region but I either use a usb cable to my computer and get the software via Garmin express or during the 18.xx betas and since I use the “Check for Update” option in the 1040 Menu>system>About (which uses Wi-Fi), both approaches give me the update first try.

  • Thanks for the advice.  I’ve got a location set right where I start, at the correct elevation.  It nonetheless gets it very wrong.  I will double check the DEM data, but that also shouldn’t be off by 50 meters.

  • Then you are lucky that you bought your device in one of the countries where software is made available.  For most of the world population, it’s not.

  • I went to check update on the device and it said “no update available”. Multiple times. But then I went into “About” and it was right there. Bizarre. Tapped the install button and it did its thing. Maybe yours is a different issue but thought I’d mention it.

  • Let me share how the elevation saga has gone thus far.  Still running on the latest available software, 17.29, since 18.23 has not yet been rolled out to 100% of users.  It has been very buggy, but is currently working.

Using automatic calibration forces elevation to be set when hitting start.  This used to give me an elevation 50 meters under ground.  During the ride, the elevation would slowly come back to where it should be.  Manually calibrating would sometimes work.  At other times it would tell me ‘waiting for GPS’ for easily an hour.  The weirdest aspect is that calibrating with GPS would work, but DEM would be waiting for the GPS endlessly.  Currently it’s working again and it calibrates perfectly to a position that I have marked near the start of the ride.  I have no idea what causes it to either work or not work, but it’s currently on a good streak.  Let’s hope it can keep it up for a while.

  • If you have trouble calibrating using DEM and having a marked location near your start helps, perhaps it's an issue with DEM data in your start area? Where do you ride? Does the elevation data seem correct in the area? Like point elevations and profiles of routes?
