Edge 1040 Solar - Calorie count

Hello,

I just bought a 1040 Solar replacing my edge 530.

Now i have a little problem with calorie counting...

Like you can see, with same route (approximatly same HR / Time) the value is very low with the new 1040 (757 vs 340).

(On the 530 HR graph the value are not beautyful, but this route is the one I take 3 times a weeks and the value are normaly between 700 - 900 calories depending my condition)

The only difference i see between the 530 and 1040 is the "new" stamina graph with the 1040

No modifications of my weight or other things.

EDGE 1040

Thanks for your help,

  • Are your HR zone settings right? How do the "Time in zones" ("Temps dans les zones") graphs compare?

For another sanity check, do both devices have a similar view of your VO2max?

The calorie difference indeed looks very strange, but in your graphs the HR graph seems surprisingly blocky to me. Do you know why you get those long periods of basically flat HR? And is the flat block of high HR in the beginning of Edge 1040 ride real?

  • Hello,

This morning i have reset the 1040 (And restore the 530 profil, like the first time for the 1040), and after that i have do the same route.

But this time, the calories are correct 717 (In my average for this course).

I don't know why the first time it doesn't correctly work... because this morning i have do the same thing(reset profil from edge 530)

    To answer to your questions,

    - HR Zone are correct

    - Similar VO2max

    - The flat HR are a bug from my HR belt, but i have the same "bug" (since some month) with my previous 530, so the results will be the same ^^

    - The flat high HR block at the beginning of Edge 1040 is not real (Bug of the sensor, generaly, the values are good after some kilometers. However i wet the belt connector to have better "conductivity")

I check to buy another belt, this magene H64 have 3 years, and maybe it's the end ^^
Now, Garmin HRM Dual or Wahoo TICKR X, i hesitate.

In any case, thank you for your help !

  • I don't have experience with Wahoo TICKR X, but Garmin HRM Dual works like a charm. I remember having to wet the electrodes and all this nonsense with old style Garmin straps. The new stuff just works, it's like day and night.

Throw out the old crap and spare those few bucks for something that actually works. I expect that your problems could just go away with more precise and valid heart rate measurements, esp. with HRV.
