Solar makes no difference

I have recently upgraded from 1030 to 1040 solar. I love the long battery life of the 1040, but solar makes precious little difference. I generally cycle early am, very little sun and often my body and head put the unit in the shade. Mostly after a 2 hour ride I get < 5 minutes charge. Not sure this is a worthwhile feature?

  • I’ve been impressed with the battery so far. A six hour ride yesterday and the battery went down only 7%, and the average solar intensity was only about 48%, so not super sunny.

While away from home for a few days, I also left the device in the window to get as much sunlight as possible. The battery went up from 91% to 97%.

  • I did a 1 hr 21 min ride today in pretty much full sun and gained 15 minutes.

  • I don't get this. You yourself write that you give the Edge probably the worst conditions for solar efficiency. And then you complain about the solar performance?

Seems weird to me. Where should it get the power from?

Recently I rode over 3 alpine passes with a lot of sunlight (except the first hour). In 5,5h I gained 1h40m. That is over 33%. Even more considering that the first hour was fully in shade.

So don't blame the tool please if you don't use it properly.

  • Until this weekend I've never really noticed or worried about it, the battery life is so good even without sun's assistance. However, after a ride on Sunday I shut the unit down with 89% charge and then, about 45 minutes into a sunny ride yesterday, it jumped up to 90%, so it's clearly helping.

  • From my experience you really need long rides in strong sunshine to see any meaningful gains. But given the long battery life and fast charging, I also question the value. I am totally willing to pay extra for more memory that Solar has. But I would happily give up solar charging for better screen readability that non-Solar has.
