Edge 1040 suddenly using lots of battery

My Edge 1040 non-solar has consistently run 50 or more hours on a charge (about 2% use per hour of riding).

Since my last full charge, usage has been a lot higher.  For example, I rode 2h 45m, and the battery was at 86%.  The Edge used another 9% the next day, on a 2h 0m ride.

I changed the back light from Auto with a moderate light level to Off, and usage is still higher than expected.  Neither of these rides used Navigation.  I have now changed to GPS only for satellite settings.

Any ideas what I might have done to increase battery usage?

  • I have a “feeling” , (not scientific, non evidence based) that the auto GPS level defaults to mostly higher accuracy / higher power levels and thus more battery, I have gone back to the minimum level because I never previously noticed any problems anyway. With even less evidence ( because I don’t use it) the free climb pro would logically use more power with constant looking ahead for possible climbs. Apart from those things Garmin does not seem to focus on battery minimising code optimisations since last few versions, eg removing “smart” recording was a backward step so likely developers do not give any priority to power  efficiency , all of course IMH ( but probably ignorant) O ?

  • Well I have all these features on and I haven’t seen any issues with the battery compared with earlier versions. It’s no perceivable difference.  It still lasts over 40 hours.

It would make sense that using climbpro could be using more battery, but I’ve not seen that.

The only thing that uses that much in short time is the backlight. Now the original poster suggests they turned that off.  Was that before or after they spotted the high usage?  I have a feeling I noticed that the backlight defaulted back on after the upgraded.  I have some recollection it did that when I normally have it off.

  • Weird, I had to take a few days off because my wife fell and broke her wrist.  I rode yesterday and today, starting from a fully charged battery, and after 3h 48m of riding time, the battery is at 96%, just about what I'd expect.

  • Sorry, the time was 2h 48m.
