️Change keyboard-layout to QWERT.., not ABCDEF...

Hello,

it is wierd to see such keyboard-layout, and it is difficult to use it either,

please change it or make it possible to use different layout.

thanks!

  • Years ago, I was working on computer software for a French company.  My boss and I spent an hour or so at LAX before boarding our flight to Paris looking at the list of problems we'd been sent, and I came up with solutions to several of them.  When I got to the company a day later, corrections had to be made using punched cards, so I sat down at the keypunch machine and started typing.  I looked at the cards I had created, and found a couple of errors. I tried to correct the first one, and it was still wrong.  That's when I realized the French keyboard has the "Z" where Americans have the "A".

These days, I see layouts on Smart TV apps that are A thru Z, and others that are QWERTY.  I find the A thru Z layouts easier to use.

I can use the Edge's text input layout for English easily enough.  I'd have to experiment with other languages, (I just changed to Spanish, and the layout didn't change.  There was no "rr", no n with a tilde, etc.  That was strange.)

Do you use English as your language on the Edge?

  • Hello Colin!

it is very interesting story of your life, I see it different. iPhones, android-phones, keyboard of PC you use everyday, every device nowadays gives you qwerty-layout as a standard. So why do people have to relearn and reinvent typing mechanics because of only Garmin 1040?

There is no logic from my point of view.

  • I like it the way it is. I would prefer the QWERTY layout but there isnt enough screen to display it properly.

    QWERT

    YUIOP

    ASDFG

    HJKLZ

    XCVBN

    M

This would drive insane to see it like this lol

  • ABCDE is universal for every country. QWERTY, QWERTZ, and other variants will not fit and take additional programming.

  • So why do people have to relearn and reinvent typing mechanics because of only Garmin 1040?

It’s not “typing mechanics” because it’s not a “typing keyboard” (no one is “touch typing” on an Edge). The basic issue is that the screen is too small and not wide enough.

For many people, how they recall where QWERTY keys are wouldn’t work on the Edges because, in fact, the keys aren’t in the same location. Many people only know the QWERTY key placement by “muscle memory”. They wouldn’t be able to recite the order. Many more people know the standard order of letters (which is why it’s the one cops ask people to say).

QWERTY on a nonstandard keyboard is not a good idea.
