Good hardware but....

I am a Garmin user for over 15 years and have always been well supported. Replacement of devices in and out of warranty has never been refused, a good service

but.....

I own the EDGE 1040 for 4 weeks and use it professionally (MTB Guide). Despite the false battery life display, my device holds out 6 days with a full charge. A good step in the right direction.
But, how can it be that the paired ANT+ sensors constantly lose the connection? Why does the device turn off and reboot when using the new ClimpPro version? Why are the altitude data of the route ridden not correct and show less?
Compared to the EDEG 830,  the hardware is a much better product, but the software (operating system) is a horror. At a purchase price of around 500 € Garmin should delivier weekly software improvements.

I hope that it will quickly come to a stable software.

  • I've had odd problems with my various Garmin headsets over the years, but the 1040 Solar has been consistently good on all fronts. Even the Climb Pro lag has improved. The only issue I experience with elevation recording is that it vastly under-reports ascent on wet, overcast days, which I always assume to be related to barometric pressure affecting the sensor. So, to cut to the chase, I'm not sure that your problem is software related, seems more likely to be faulty hardware to me.

  • Absolutely spot on! This is my first MTB headset and I can honestly say the the 1040 is an awful device. Constant disconnections and rebooting while navigating a course, training plans not synched from the Connect App are just two of the most annoying issues that I have to go through. This level of product is well below anyone's expectations. I own multiple devices from this brand (fenix 7, Rally 200, Edge 1040, HRM Pro+ and Index S2). I had connectivity issues with the Rally for which the product was returned to the vendor, but my frustration with the Edge 1040 is on another level! I wonder if Garmin is a company on decline.

  • I decided to purchase the $100 Topo 24k West map, and I deleted all of the other road cycling and trail maps from my 1040 head unit. This works great on or off road, the elevation data is way more accurate and the turn by turn navigation is dead on perfect. FWIW, detailed cartography is expensive to produce. YMMV

  • How would you compare the topo 24k maps compared to the standard maps that come with the 1040 if you ONLY do on road riding? Thanks

  • IIRC, the routable cycle maps have a 100k accuracy.

I have a road bike that is getting more difficult to ride due to the lack of road maintenance, so I have been riding my gravel touring bike with larger tires. We have some offroad trails that lead to some nice vistas, and they are depicted on the 24k Topo map including elevation and turn-by-turn routing.
