Beginner basic navigation advice

I have a 1040 solar bought to use for e-mountain biking in the UK.

I'm not bothered by any of the fitness tracking functionality, the main thing I want is to be able to load a gpx route and follow it.  Being able to display certain data from my bike is a bonus.

So I have so far only really tried it once and my experience was not good.

I uploaded a Kamoot route but I am happy to simply upload GPX files if that's better.

I knew where the route started and it followed a well defined and large public path/trail.  Initially it sent me in the wrong direction.  I stopped, realised and turned around.

Once I was following the correct train I found it was beeping every 30s or so and an arrow was displayed alerting me to being off track.  This made it difficult to see my position on the route but I was clearly following it correctly.

I managed to switch off the audible alerts but the alerts were on the screen for the whole ride, making it very difficult to navigate.  I did make it but was concerned that I would get lost the whole way.

If I could just get the basics of uploading a route (one I've found from wherever or planned myself) and being able to follow it with directions I'd be happy as it's a neat device with a decent size screen and battery life.

Any help would be appreciated and perhaps any other recommended features to switch off (or on) to avoid a frustrating experience.

Thanks

  • Yes more info needed, a screenshot, photo of the screen “worth a thousand words”

you might review the VeloGPS 1040 navigation demo video to confirm what you can expect , the data screen setup one also worthwhile

Being off course can trigger different things depending on various recalculation settings but generally not “an arrow” it might be telling you something else, off course may display a text box at the top of the screen saying “Off Course”

You might be getting “Sharp Bend” warnings, turn these off ( search support help for sharp turn)

  • Thanks

It was a while ago so my memory of exactly what was displayed might be a bit rusty but it definitely was covering the most important part of the map and repeatedly beeping.

    • Rather than work out what went wrong I'm happy to just learn a simple method of entering routes and following them which shouldn't cause problems.  I'll view your suggestions and try again.

Good approach, knowing what "should" happen helps focus on what isn't . Part of the problem is there are some long term 1040 navigation issues and that effect some users on some rides. For MTB the "sharp bend" warnings are not much use (Men > Activity profiles > (Select profile) > Alerts & Prompts > Sharp Bend Warnings > Enable/Disable)

  • This can only be a guess, because as others have said there's not really enough information here. However, I note that you say that you've downloaded a route and that you initially were sent the wrong way. Are you sure you hadn't assumed the route was (for example) clockwise, whenit was actually clockwise? That WOULD result in the behaviour you describe. Routes are (obviously) directional.

  • Did you create the route in Kamoot, or did you select a route someone else created?  It almost sounds as if the route was created in the opposite direction of what you wanted to ride it.

  • I once followed a route I was given in a car to see how difficult it was, and for the whole route I was getting beeps every 30s and a big triangle in the centre of the screen. The "problem" was I forgot to actually start the route, and it was prompting me to start.

  • I understand exactly, had same issue.  It's indicating for you to 'start' navigating/exercise/course etc., to do that, on the 1040 lower right corner exterior is a start/stop button (there is a button on the lower left corner too).  So in total, there are three external buttons, the power button and the two lower right/left buttons.  Have fun :)

  •   Number 4 on the screen is the button I'm talking about
