Map ONLY when navigating a course

I'm a 1040 newbie, so please be kind. :)

I've searched and searched, but I cannot figure out how to get my new Garmin 1040 to only display the map (of the new course I am navigating).  OR, to leave the map on the screen sooner/longer when a turn is approaching. I'm fine with the default screen-switching when winging it (not navigating a course) OR following someone else.

I am/was using the default ROAD activity profile and have tried creating a new/custom one to do what I want, but no cigar.

My other Garmin devices (hiking, boating) always leave the map on the screen unless I tell them otherwise, but my 1040 cycles through multiple display screens at very inconvenient (for me) time. I'd be happy if I could manually switch screens.  But I just don't want it to happen on its own.

I keep thinking it must be easy to make this change (customization), but I've spent hours trying to figure out on my own and cannot figure it out.

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance,

-dave (from New England)

  • Welcome Dave, lookup the VELOGPS videos on YouTube ( https://www.youtube.com/@VELOGPSTHEINNERTUBE ) , some specifically for the 1040 on general navigation and data screen setup. You might disable the screen Auto-Scroll feature and then it does not cycle through all the screens, you will find the setting under each profile settings

PS The Auto-Scroll is actually very well hidden

    Menu>Activity Profiles> [Select Profile ] >Data Screens> [3 Vertical Dots top right of screen ]>Auto Scroll Disable/Off

  • Thanks, @L.Rouge. Indeed, I have been watching their videos in my search to find an answer.  But for some reason, I am failing at some step in the process, when creating my own, custom, activity profile  Disappointed

I guess I’m hoping that someone else who’s been through the same challenge, that I am having will speak up.

Nonetheless, I really appreciate your response. Thumbsup tone1

  • Thank you! I bet that's it. I'll give it a try later today.

  • You might then also experiment with

Menu > Activity Profiles > [Select Profile ] > Navigation > Navigation Prompts > (Text Only or Map ) , determines if the 1040 switches to the zoomed in Turn View or stays on the Map Screen as the Turn approaches as per VeloGPS video)

  • Indeed, the "well hidden" Auto Scroll menu item was the thing I was not finding.

    Thank you very much, @L.Rouge!!!
