Edge 1040 navigation creates routes way longer than needed.

Edge 1040 starting to be a big distraction from biking.  Great battery life, great GPS accuracy, but SAME firmware fiasco as early edge 1000.  I should have waited another 5 years to buy a more mature firmware...  :-)

This time it is the routing that gives much longer than necessary routes, no matter what combination of settings I try.
One concrete example - from near Guilford Town Green (say Old Whitfield St x Seaside Ave) to New Haven Union Station:

RideWithGPS - 15.4mi 665ft
Strava routing - 16.5mi 631ft

Edge 1000 - 16.5mi (road bike / min distance / avoid all)
Edge 1000 - 16.5mi (road bike / min distance / avoid nothing)
Edge 1000 - 16.9mi (road bike / min ascent / avoid nothing)
Edge 1000 - 16.9mi (road bike / min time / avoid nothing)

Edge 1040 - 21.4mi 1426ft (road bike / min distance / avoid nothing / popularity off)
Edge 1040 - 20.2mi 1423ft (road bike / min ascent / avoid nothing / popularity off)
Edge 1040 - 20.7mi 1459ft (road bike / min time / avoid nothing / popularity off)

Edge 1040 - 19.6mi 1397ft (road bike / min distance / avoid nothing / popularity on)
Edge 1040 - 20.2mi 1422ft (road bike / min ascent / avoid nothing / popularity on)
Edge 1040 - 19.5mi 1407ft (road bike / min time / avoid nothing / popularity on)

Edge 1040 - 19.6mi 1402ft (road bike / min distance / avoid all / popularity on)
Edge 1040 - 20.2mi 1375ft (road bike / min ascent / avoid all / popularity on)
Edge 1040 - 39.6mi 2845ft (road bike / min time / avoid all / popularity on)

No matter what setting I tried, no route got close to the obvious ones that any online routing app locked to. Even the 8yr old Edge 1000 had no problems.
Each group of 3 above has minimize distance then ascent then time. Interesting to notice:
1. Edge 1000 shortest was the minimize distance one, as expected.
2. Edge 1040 pop off/no avoidance has the longest route given when set to 'minimize distance'???
3. Edge 1040 pop on/avoid nothing has the shortest one when minimizing time (not distance)?  By little, but it's the principle.
4. Edge 1040 pop on/avoid all has the shortest when asked, the least ascent also correct, but impossible that the 39.6mi course with over 2x the climb it suggests is faster than any of the other two.

What is going on?
A. Some secret setting I am missing?
B. Maps are like 2008 OSM, still full of no connects, unroutable roads, etc?
C. Maps are perfect (same in Connect, I suppose?) but firmware is bad.
D. I need to spend days trying different maps of different versions, enable, disable, download (it is so slooow)

It seems the best solution for now is to bring along the Edge 1000  :-(
