[Edge 1040 solar] How to enable screen off while riding until you touch it. Sadly battery save mode don't do that for me.

Dear members,

A few years ago while using 1030/1030+? device I was able to enable a mode where the screen would goes off while riding and recording. I only have to touch it to re-enable the screen for a few seconds. I don't remember exactly how.

Now I am using a 1040 solar device and want to have this enabled it again. It turns out, while I am not 100% sure, that this is linked to the Battery Save mode.

The point is that, enabling it, my screen stays on forever and I don't notice any behaviour difference.

Am I missing something there ? I am using last firmware, 17.29.

Thanks for your help,

FJ

  • It looks like they have eliminated the screen off behavior in battery save mode for the 40 series. This is very disappointing, i could go a solid week without ever taking my 830 off my bike to charge. It looks like the non solar 840/1040 has no screen off in battery saver mode either. That was by far my favorite garmin improvement along with climb pro. So I hope the solar makes up for that. Maybe the same battery life as  30 series  but the screen is always on?

I will say that this is not a big surprise. I seemed to be among a small minority of people who liked the screen auto off. Most people like it on all the time.

  • I might be mis-understanding what you want but,

    menu > system > display

has two options relevant, the backlight % and the Backlight Timeout Duration

Assuming say 10% and 30 seconds then

Riding with an activity recording the backlight will generally be off unless an alert or a touch on the screen has triggered the backlight which stays on for the duration set and then goes off. The touch actually displays the (I think it is called) timer overlay with some info at the top and Home Screen icon and left / right paging arrows but the overlay disappears after a few seconds leaving the last screen viewed.

A bit move complicated if a course is being followed as the overlay screen also has “stop/ pause navigation” button but this too disappears after the same few seconds.

For me a better UI might be for a second touch to bring up the overlay but others would complain about that too.

I generally ignore Battery Saver Mode and just set backlight % & timeout duration to a minimum (mostly both off) unless riding at night then 10% is enough and 15 or 30 seconds.

  • Hi Rob

Thanks for confirming this. BTW just found this thread https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-1040-series/304366/battery-saver-mode confirming again.

Still don't understand why I didn't find it yesterday, apologises for the duplicate.

    Thanks,

    Fab
