Garmin 1040 dropping all sensors

Hi

I am VERY disapointed on my Garmin 1040. Typically it drops all Ant+ sensor  2-3 times during a 3hours ride! Only way to restore connections is to store your ongoing ride data, shutdown the Garmin and power it up again! I have absolutely  no extra IQ apps and I have the latest firmware 17.29. It os really irritating to have to stop and start all over! How will it become in these long ride events I will attend in thi summer! I will loose all power information, control of the light.... I will not be able to stop and restart in these big events! Now I really want that Garmin takes the fully responsibility and fix this or send you new working unit to me. Sensor normally connected when I ride: Di2, VARIA 510 light, Favero Assioma power pedal and Bluetooth to Iphone. I have use (or tryied to use)  this Garmin 1040 from beginning of April this year.

I am waiting for a fast fix!

  • I've started seeing something similar. It's always a roll of the dice which sensors the 1040 will see when I start, and usually, something disconnects during the ride. Three km in on my last ride, it dropped my Rally 200, and Whoop. I had to stop, save, and restart the device, go through the sensors screen, and click 'Connect' for each sensor before it worked. Then it worked fine for the rest of the ride.

  • I've had the same and it's only started in the past month. I've had six months before of the same configuration with no problems. Mine seems to drop all connected devices about 20 or so kilometers into it.

  • Happened to me as well today for the first time. Polar H10 was dropped connection, together with speed and cadence sensors, after 1 km of riding. after reconnect  - didn't happen again for this ride

  • Same for me too, this appeared recently, presumably after the last firmware update.  The only solution I have found is to power the unit off and on again mid ride which seems to solve the problem and all the sensors appear instantly on start up.

  • I went ahead and did the following:

    1. Fully reset all of my accessories

    2. Removed all installed apps from the edge

    3. Re-connected everything

This worked.i did 125 km today without any dropouts.

  • I have mentioned this elsewhere but easily missed, three weeks ago Garmin started a beta for x30 devices with the sole item of

    • A fix to address sensor dropout issues experienced by some customers

So unless it is an entirely "marketing" beta we have to assume Garmin development/support team has gathered enough data to point them at a possible direction to address the sensor dropout issue which is reported for all device ranges and by hundreds of users.  They may be using the x30 users as guinea pigs to test out their theory. There is a "Community Discussion" in the Beta Program Forum with observations regarding the beta, with positive/negative views ebbing & flowing, not overwhelmingly in either direction.

If Garmin was convinced that the issue was due to noisy electronic environments then they would(?) post a statement regarding this and perhaps list the things we as users could do to reduce / eliminate the issue. I try to minimise possible interference and have never had a dropout on the road BUT frequently get them when using my indoor trainer (Tacx)

A reset or new software will often modify the environment enough to deduce / increase dropouts for a time and this muddies the water a bit.

Hopefully Garmin are on to the scent and will generalise a successful fix to all devices but if not than they should at least publish a "best practice guideline so we can reduce our dropouts.

  • Hi

I hope you are unit is still working. I try to take any chanse to see if someone out there can find a way to get this disaster Garmin 1040 to work. Sorry your suggested method did not help on my unit. I had 2 doppouts on 6km today after a total factory reset and add sensors one by one manually.. Please let me know how it went for you

  • The good news for you is that you're not the only suffering this issue. The bad news for you is that I started seeing this issue since 16.8 firmware :) and Garmin hasn't done anything to fix it since then. I was on Beta program and had the issue there, then I requested RMA for my Edge and they sent me a brand new Edge 1040 and of course I didn't go Beta firmware again, and the issue persist :(

    I use:

    Varia light

    SRAM RED AXS groupset

    Garmin DUAL HRM

    Giant Speed/Cadence Sensor

Last thing I did was to disconnect the Giant Speed/Cadence sensor which in someway it mitigated the issue, actually my SRAM Red crankset powermeter is also measuring my cadence and speed somehow, although the issue was mitigated in part (before the speed/Cadence didn't re-connect by themselves) because everything gets reconnected automatically, the issue persists, nevertheless before this I was able to use my Giant Speed/Cadence sensor with no issues so it is ridiculous.

    forums.garmin.com/.../7-23---1040-edgegarmin-varia-still-disconnecting

I am actually sending data to Garmin support and they said Engineering is working on the fix based of my feedback, i've been sending them data for a month. But sadly the issue still there, I don't see any progress nor intention to fix it, unfortunately I'd advise to request a refund and go for other Cyclocomputer brand (if you're still on the refund window), because I haven't seen any improvement since the issue started in 16.08 and actually we're in 17.29 and it's been a monthn since the 17.29 was released.

    Regards.

  • Great device, same fiasco on firmware.

Sensor simply drop and won't reconnect until a reboor.

Typically hsppens a couple minutes into a ride, after all connected fine.  Not in every ride, but seems like happens after device goes into sleep.

stages pwr on ant+, garmin speed sensor, garmin hrm, di2, tempe.

tempe field also stopped working. first sendor disappeared completely from list, then i re-added after restart, it connects but "tempe field" connectiq never gets data nor logs to fit, now.

    GARMIN - LISTEN!

  • My 1040 is a little different as it randomly drops Max. Speed and Avg. Speed so my ride data is pretty much useless to drop into Garmin Cnnect after the ride. Nothing (restart, fiddling with sensors) seems to help it. Then it will work properly a day later when I go out. Very frustrating. Software v17.29.
