Edge 1040 will not connect to Di2

My 105 Di2 (12-speed) sensor has stopped connecting to my Edge 1040. I have had no issues connecting for a couple months now, but now it just won't connect at all. My HRM and Shimano Ultegra power meter are connected.

Steps:

  1. Hold down function button on the rear derailleur for 1 second to get the flashing blue light.
  2. Selecting 'add sensor', then 'Shimano Di2'. It tells me to shift gears to connect, but when I do that nothing happens.

I have tried deleting the bike and restarting the 1040. I have also tried deleting and re-registering in the e-Tube iOS app.

Any ideas?

  • I found that the "discovery" process only activates when I unplug the battery of the Di2

  • Do you mean the main battery on the bike? I tried that but there was no change.

Are you following the same steps as me?

  • Yes, the DI2 battery...I have 11s Ultrega...

  • And I guess e-tube connects ok?  Just trying to check that it’s not the wireless communication on the Di2 that hasn’t failed.

  • Yes, e-tube connects. Thanks for asking. I wouldn't call it reliable and sometimes I have to delete the bike and re-add it.

I was able to try the other communication settings in the e-tube app but they didn't work. So it's set to Bluetooth. The other options were ANT and bluetooth/ANT. Guessing they don't work with Apple devices.

  • Just asking what you mean by try other communication settings. E-tube only really connects via Bluetooth from a phone, this is correct.  A computer with an ANT+ dongle I guess could connect that way. You don’t mean you are then changing which communications are turned on. You will need ANT+ turned on for the Garmin to talk to the DI2.

I can’t remember myself that you can turn on and off the communication available from the Di2. Maybe this is a feature I’ve not seen.  If you have some how disabled the ANT+ from being sent out from the Di2, turn it back on.

I’ve also never had unreliable connections with E-TUBE. Always solid. Then again I have the older 11 speed version with a separate dongle, not the newer built into the derailleur version. I’d still expect it to be good though.
