Edge 1040 Solar compatible with Vector 2?

Hi,

Upgrading from Edge 1000 (destroyed / crushed) to Edge 1040 Solar. I have all my sensors connected to my Edge 1040, and data screens set up, even for my trusted Vector 2 pedals. Everything seems to work, except I'm NOT receiveing any DATA from my Vector 2 (only blank data fields riding around the neighborhood). The sensors screen shows them (both L & R) as connected, batteries OK, serial and firmware version etc.

While starting to pedal, I'm asked to calibrate. I do as adviced (click out, and run the calib), but after calibration is done, it shows no numbers, only two 'hyphens'.

What to check, and what to do?

  • Did the sensors import and set themselves up?  If so delete the sensor and add in as new. While the sensor import is neat and mostly works, there are times it doe do a good job. Usually installing it “fresh” can sort things out

  • If you mean if I did a transfer from the old unit, no I did not (It got destroyed, hence a need for a new unit). I did a search for sensors, and the 1040 found them all as expected.

I'll certainly try to delete the power (Vector 2) sensor, and try a new sensor-search (after thoroughly restarting the 1040 unit, [I have learned]). A test for tomorrow...

    Thank you for the tip!

  • Hi the Vector 2 pedals did work on the 1040. However since V17 beta the calibration does not work unable to set angles. My work around has been to use my old 1030 to set angles then you are able to calibrate on 1040 as normal. This was reported but don’t know if it’s been fixed in the latest version. Not setting angles will make V2 give no reading. This is not required on Vector 3 pedals just calibration.

  • Thanks Rogis, that sounds just terrible (I'm on the latest FW as of today, 17.29). Since Garmin seems not to give a sh.., I'll either have to borrow some unit (other model) from others, or return / sell my 1040. Sad, because playing with the 1040, the screen 'works', with large and clear fonts, adapted to my eye-sight...

  • The sensor transfer actually happens when you set up and connect onto your Garmin account.  You don’t need the old unit.  I was sure it did it from the 1000 to the 1030, although badly. The 1030 to 1040 is better but still has problems (radar/lights in particular). It also brings over other data in the process from your account.

if you look in Garmin connect now you will see a sensors section.  It also warns you of low batteries.

Sounds like you did a set up first with doing the connection to Garmin connect. I’d still try the delet and reinstall anyway just to be sure.

  • New test this afternoon: It did NOT help to delete, restart, and search for power sensors. They did get added and connected, but no data.

It turns out Rogis is right and spot on: A friend helped testing with an older model series Edge 8x0. The first thing asked on the 800, is to set the angles (ride with some cadence), click out of pedals, and THEN calibrate. After that, tested again with the 1040: VOILA, after the calibration has been run, finally data is coming through!
(So, I've learned that angles-data value is actually set in the pedals electronics.)

What happens if I accidentally press the menu item (yes, it is there under sensors) to clear the angles. We did not test that...

GARMIN: Please add the choice / possibility to set angles on Vector 2, with the 1040!! Afterall, it seems I can clear them? What happens if I do clear them? And how often should they, or need they, be reset?

  • I have now raised a support case for this via email waiting for a reply . May I suggest you do the same.

  • Thank you Rogis. I have now done the same, through the Garmin support website for my country, and my language...

  • A followup on this (as a warning to others): I just got a reply from Garmin (Norway support office), that the Edge 1040 simply is NOT COMPATIBLE with Vector 2.

So, it seems I should be looking for other power meters. Since Garmin seemingly just 'drops' their own product lines, I must look for other brands. Any suggestions from any of you, who came from Garmin dropped products, to other brands?

  • Would you be okay with providing us with a public link to a recent ride where your Vector 2 pedals were paired, but did not display power data? This would help us diagnose what may be causing this.
