Edge 1040 Solar - disappointing navigation experience (komoot import)

Hi,

I just had my first ride out with my new Edge 1040 Solar and the entire experience was kind of disappointing. I used to ride with a Teasi One 3 before which used to work way better out of the box. I'm hoping I can tweak some settings here or find out if I did something wrong.

Let's go through my "workflow".

I plan my bike trips using komoot and wanted to use the Edge to keep me on my planned track. I expected the Edge to be more accurate and being able to guide me for several days without needing to drain my phone's battery. Also getting me out of the deepest jungle when I don't have an internet connection.

I have connected komoot and my Edge before, but otherwise I haven't done anything with it.

Connect IQ Komoot app issue:

I would consider this more of a komoot issue, but I'll mention it anyway:
I sent the planned route to my device. I see it in the Garmin komoot app. There is a "Start" button, but it didn't work (it worked now when re-testing it). So I was looking for the route in the system and found it in "Saved Courses". Along many other random komoot courses from years ago. I have no idea why those were synced to my Edge and why they keep resyncing even when I delete them.

Now, my main issue:

I started the navigation from the system and saw my planned route on the map, but that's all I get. I expected to see turn instructions, highlights of the path I need to stay on, maybe automatic display brightness changes when it's time to take a turn, but nothing. Just a red path on the map which is somewhat visible under good light conditions and hardly detectable when the Edge is in the shadow.

My Teasi used to tell me in how many meters there is the next turn. The display changed to maximum brightness when I arrived at the place and the relevant segment was very clearly highlighted.

Not really any better:

As soon as I deviated slightly from my planned path I just got a "Route calculation error".

  • As “they” (at least I) say, a video is worth a million words, check out the VeloGPS video on 1040 navigation

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8LiOdbnaW8

But there are a few (quite a lot) of issues introduced in recent software releases especially around navigation which worked better a year ago when the video was made, good luck

ps also view their data screen setup video

  • The thing is, I never got to see those arrows showing the path to take. The top area just kept showing "Continue to cycleway" for the first 10-15 km when I took a wrong way the first time and it actually re-routed me after calculating a long time. This is when the instruction changed to "Continue to street name", while the street name was the starting/finishing point and it kept like this for the remaining 25-30 km.

  • As you are new to the 1040 and new to Garmin(?) the problem might be settings

Is “Turn Guidance” turned on? From Home Screen, Navigation > Courses, select the 3 dots settings menu top right of corse list screen, first item is Turn Guidance, Enable this.

Then, ensuring you have a GPS fix,  Select your course, at the bottom of the course summary is “RIDE” , select this, press the START button (bottom right) , you may have to swipe left / right to get to the map screen.

If that works you might still need a few other setting to get the display like in the video including settings for “Guide Text”, “Navigation Prompt” and various Re-Routing settings.

  • I was looking for this Turn Guidance setting before as I saw it in the KB, but was unable to find it.

I tried it for another tour without changing any settings, except there was a system update from 16.something to 17.something. This time I did get the instructions as well. However, first time I slightly left my course, actually just for a planned stop on my tour to park my bike, it tried to recalculate my route again, failed to do so and from this point on the instructions stopped again, even though I got right back on the course where I left it.

This is a big problem for me, my tour usually consists of several intermediate stops where I would go around a bit, either by bike or by foot, before I go on again with the tour. I would expect it to just lead me back to my tour and then continue with the course navigation. I can't have that one slight deviation will break my navigation on a course.

    Related issue:

I could not figure out how to put it in sleep mode while I'm on a tour and I'm going around on a stop. I'm parking my bike somewhere and will take the Edge with me, as it would be gone immediately otherwise. It will keep trying to give me navigation instructions and do route re-calculations while I'm walking inside a store. The sleep/power button will only lock and unlock the display.

  • There are a few discussions regarding Recalculations in the forums, its not well understood perhaps not even by Garmin. The "safe" settings (IMO) for the Recalculations

(Menu (or Settings) > Activity Profiles > Select Profile > Navigation > Routing > Course Recalculation > Auto Pause and similar for Route Recalculation > Off.

Review the forum posts for other options but with these settings it wil not attempt to "Recalculate" when you go off course , it will be up to you to get back on-course where you like (follow the map) and it will then say "Course Found" and will resume instructions from the next point.(NOTE: this is per Profile so has to be done for each profile but not Indoor Training where it does not apply)

As for sleep etc, Hold the Power Button for a few seconds and it comes up with options to "Sleep" "Power Off or "Lock Screen", to wake it press power button again.
