Hard to understand…

I was using beta version 17.28B this week until today when I got the message of an update to version 17.29 for my 1040 solar, so I installed it.

Being aware of the sensor disconnection issues reported from long ago, I always turn off the unit completely, no sleep mode, after a ride. By doing a full start, I avoided this issue… until today.

In getting ready for the ride, I gave the cranks a spin to wake up the 4iiii power meter to calibrate it and the process was done normally. Started the ride and within a few meters, I noticed I had no power related data in the fields. No cadence, no power. I stopped and, thinking I may have forgotten to do the full turn off after the last ride, stopped the activity, turned the unit off and turned it on again. This had worked in the past to fix this issue. Not this time for the power meter. The heartrate and speed sensors were detected but not the power.

With a lot of frustration, I went on with my ride as I was going late. While riding I tried to connect the power meter several times using the sensors widget but never happened. I decided to stop again and do the off/on routine again and… no power.

Took my cell phone out and checked the power meter with the 4iii app and it was detected and showing to be in normal operation.

So, I resigned to a training ride with no power training data. At least the heartrate monitor was working and I used that as a guideline.

About mid ride, I was close to home and decided to grab my Wahoo Bolt 2 and test whether there was a connection problem with the power meter. Started the Wahoo and all power data showed well in it for the reminder of the ride. The 4iiii power meter was working well as usual. Not so the 1040.

Last week with 17.28B I started testing the drink alert and was working well for the most part except that the 0.2 bottle drink did not showed up. I thought I missed it but as I did a screen recording (available in beta versions) I was able to confirm it did not show. Not a big deal for me.

Today with 17.29… no drink alerts at all. I checked whether they might have turned off by the update but not, the setup was correct: alerts under the Smart setting were on.

And since the battery meter issue was discovered, every time I ride, I give it a look: 8 hours with 80% battery. Maybe, as it has been mentioned before, it is just a meter display issue, not a battery issue, but an issue nonetheless.

It is hard to understand why Garmin’s Edge Series flagship unit is loaded with a plethora of issues resulting in not even meeting the advertised performance, making it unreliable for the intended use most of us looked for at the time of purchase.

And it is hard to understand why they have not been solved yet when they have been reported for a long time.

Hard to understand.

  • The 1040 and now 540/840 have a pile of issues documented in many posts, over and over again, Garmin does not fix or even acknowledge they exist, the hardware is great, great battery, great screen but the software is becoming worse and worse, issues reported by beta testers but software released anyway, strong indications that they don’t even do basic testing of their changes, I think Garmin has lost it!

  • I wrote this post in the Beta forums:

a week ago I contacted Garmin support and requested RMA for the unit that I had as I was desperated. The unit arrived on Tuesday, and I did Zwift rides since then, hence I didn't use my Edge 1040 Recertified (they said it was brand new); the unit arrived with a 12.x firmware and as soon as I turned on It was updated to 17.x (I left from Beta program to avoid any Beta release on this brand new edge). Today was my first ride with the new Edge 1040, i turned it on and was surprised that it wanted to instal 17.29, so I proceed. While riding I noticed that the issue persisted, first my Garmin Varia light was disconnected again, but the sensors were disconnected too, that happened 2 times for the sensors and like 3-4 times with the Varia, then it stopped...I got a bittersweet feeling of happiness. BUT THEN! The most awful issue started...The Speed Sensor just got disconnected, over and over every 10-20 minutes or so...oh my god! This is ridiculous! The speed sensor when gets disconnected the Activity is Paused automatically, so imagine I was riding at 35-40mi/h and PUMM the sensor is gone and my activity got paused in middle of a high speed segment. How I fixed? Deactivating/Activating the sensor manually holy s**t, every time I had to do that. Then I did 3 sprints at 1000-1200w and the sensor died again, giving the impression that sprinting somehow triggered the issue...

My feeling right now: Disappointed, really disappointed with Garmin, this issue started in 16.8 and persists until today, different flavors, different ways...same issue: Sensors Disconnected (or Varia which is pretty much another sensor).

I have a few gran fondos and races, and I am really worried about this issue while racing.

  • I had a Edge 830 before which I sold to buy the 1040...I really regret about that, I should've kept my 830 which was always so reliable.

  • Hello, today the power meter connection and drink alerts worked well.
No changes with the battery meter: 6 hours life with 70% battery.

It is a very nice device when it works well
