Lots of MTB navigation issues, are they now fixed?

I want to travel around the US (for now) and be able to do this for non-familiar MTB trail systems.

  1. Ask the unit to show nearby trails, and let me pick a system.
  2. Ask the unit to create a "beginner" route for me.
  3. Navigate from my place (Vrbo, AirBnb, hotel, campground, etc.) to the trail head
  4. Have the unit provide reliable TBT navigation.
  5. Have unit give be directions back to my place.

I've read the forum by just searching for "MTB navigation" and see issues for each of the topics above. Some have resolutions, and some don't. Is the 1040 now reliable to serve this purpose - exclusive MTB trail navigation?

  • Hi,

I have very similar use cases in mind, but in Europe, Finland. Here one issue seems to be a lack of course/route/trail data. There are plenty of trails, but categorizations or difficulty levels are not known and the "beginner route" can turn into a pro level route with a lot of ground contact and carrying the bike.

I once found some settings on what "trail difficulty levels" to use when navigating or creating a course, but I can't find those settings anymore, anywhere. Could someone point out where to find them? I can't even remember if it was in Garmin Connect website, Connect app, or on the Edge device.

So, not really answering the question, but interested in same use cases and more detailed navigation/course creation options.

  • Are you using the TrailForks app to load courses? Do you have the TrailForks maps enabled? I think the "Create route" option and select by difficulty is only available on TrailForks, since that's the only map system that will have this information.
