Stuck on power off

When i try to turn off the device it randomly stucks on the screen with power off logo and keeps draining the battery - even the backlight is on as you can see on the photo so I have to double check everytime i want to power off. Only hard reset helps. Firmware 17.26

  • There is a thread titled "Incomplete Shutdown" from 11 months ago that describes the same behavior.  I had this happen when my Edge 1040 was new as well.  That made me watch the unit until I saw it go completely off (a gray screen).  I still keep an eye on it, but it has never happened again, after hundreds of rides.

Go read what the "Incomplete Shutdown" thread says to do to get out of where you are, and I think you'll be fine from now on.

  • i had the same experience 2-3 times with 9.26 and Edge 840. Now i am running on beta 9.28, we will see..

  • Thanks for a reply. If you are talking about this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-1040-series/298370/incomplete-shutdown

then it doesn’t really give any solutions. It just confirms that I’m not alone.

  • I just meant that it says to press the On/Off button until the unit restarts (which you already knew).  From what I see on the forum, this problem goes away for everyone who has experienced it.  It went away for me....

  • I posted about this issue a about a week ago and still have this hang every other ride. I ride daily so this new 1040 is getting used a lot. I am at point where I am wondering if the cause of the problems is the WAHOO fitness speed sensor and the 1040 compatibility. Any others experiencing this hang use other manufactures sensors. I am going to delete this sensor tomorrow and see if the problem goes away.

  • I have wahoo cadence and speed sensors in one bike, Wahoo speed sensor and 4iiii power meter on another and wear a Polar HRM and can power on/off with no problems at all

  • I can only speak for 1030 series, which have/had this power icon issue, too. It turned out, that some file(s) caused the problem. Connect your device to your PC/Mac and:
-delete all files in /Garmin/NewFiles (if there are any)
-backup and delete all files in Activities

  • I recall that I had problems with some earlier generation of Edge (perhaps the 1000) when my activities had nearly filled the available memory.  I make it a point to copy my activities to Garmin storage as well as to my PC, so I can regularly delete all but the newest activities from the Edge.

The Edge 1040 has 32GB of storage, which seems like a lot.  And a typical activity for me only takes about 80% as much storage as the same activity does on the 1030 Plus.  However, if you have updated your maps to take advantage of Climb Pro "free ride", the maps reduce free storage significantly.  Just the North America map increased in size by about 1.7GB on my 1040.  So a shortage of storage is not beyond the realm of possibility.

Users with the solar version have 64GB, so they should not be affected.

  • I wish the available memory issue was the problem. With only having this 1040 for 10 days and 10 rides, there is plenty of memory available. I have only loaded North American maps and the Trailforks poi`s. Lots of free memory. I also use and iPhone. Does this problem occur equally between IOS and Android. Currently running IOS 16.5 update. Will try running with speed sensor deleted and then next test will be with the iOS Garmin connect app logged off. Strange issue. Every other ride the 1040 hangs on shutdown. Also, the 1040 updated tonight to firmware 17.29 so tomorrow and next day's ride will see if firmware update helps. If not, the listed tests will be performed next. My opinion which is from my observations is that my unit is not suffering from lack of memory. This is definitely an issue with the device's shutdown routine which Garmin needs to look at. It's a crap shoot when this happens if your last rides data is saved. In my case it has been saved which leads me to believe that Garmin has a bug in their shutdown routine for the 1040 and sounds like other units too.

  • Well, It looks like Garmin has solved this problem with latest firmware update 17.29. My chat with support said they fixed this issue and so far, that looks like it is fixed. Hope I don`t shoot myself in the foot after my ride today. Now to enjoy without annoying power down hang. Time will tell.
