1040 Solar Elevation incorrect and gradients incorrect

Hi

my edge 1040 solar is reading half the elevation it should at the end of a ride.

I’ve cleaned the barometer port, I’ve set to auto adjust elevation at start of ride etc.

one day randomly it just started reading off track and wasn’t following the roads like the gps was wrong.  Then I noticed the elevation for a 1400m ride was reading 500m at the end.

it’s not rectified it’s self and the elevation is half what it should be.  I’ve also noticed that the gradients on climbs may read -3% for instance when going up hil? Possibly 3% uphill.

im not entirely sure what else to do with it, the PM and HR etc are all fine the gps now is fine.  It’s just the elevation?

any ideas? Wondering if it’s a software or hardware issue.Ilec I say the altimeter port on the back looks clean?

thanks in advance

nick

  • I actually just went into calibrate and it’s saying -87m and yet we live at the top of a hill.  Then when I go out and back into calibrate (elevation) it reads differently, dropping, so next. It’s -99, the -115, then go in again and it’s -125?

    im standing still?

  • I have same problem and it only started 2 do this in the past 3 days.  While riding the display read 500 and some feet then just stops counting.  Today it go to 635 feet and stopped working.  When I finished the ride the "ride review" said I went 3,166 feet which is abiut what I expected and Strava said I climbed 3,167 feet so I think that's my rides elevation gained.  So why does it just stop accumulating elevation gain while on the ride ? This pisses my off because I watch my elevation so I can get the elevation I want per ride.  Sometimes I want to climb a mile (5,280 feet)  but now I have no idea what the number is while on that ride.

I just got done updating the automatic software so I have a sneaking suspicion that the uodate screwed this up and now im fu©ked.

Well Garmin, we are waiting for ur excuses and more importantly,  the fix.

  • Yeah so the way I’m looking at it is it’s affecting ride data, the primary purpose for buying the unit. In my eyes it makes it faulty.

I can live with Climb pro not working, or segment issues, but when it affects the primary purpose of having the unit……..it bugs me.

the thing is, is it software? Or hardware?  In my eyes it’s a faulty product.

  • I just reset the altimeter to use GPS fpr tracking altitude.  Before I manually input nt 530 ft above sealevel and was using that to adjust my elevation.  So we shall c if rhe changes anything. Like I say before this only started happening afte I updater the last firmware.  Coincidence or not I dont know but in trying this before I do a factory reset.  I dread the thought of having to set up all my dara screens again.  That sucks

  • Well I found out something.  The false/stuck altimeter was from a app from Garmin IQ app store. As soon as I deleted the app my altimeter started working. I cant find which one I was using so I cant tell u the name but I was using an app that measured gradients. It must not have liked the latest firmware updates. Please see if this may be ur problem.  It's worth a shot. My 1040 is working as designed now. I hope it works 4 u

  • Hi, that’s good. Personally never used or downloaded apps to the device.

today rode down into the village and the elevation dropped to -155m below sea level?  I was standing still.  See pic.

it coincided with a spike in temperature that didn’t exist.

and on a 9% hill it was reading -3% gradient?

  • But with auto calibration turned off for elevation it seemed to pic up the gain and descent reasonably correctly.  Similar elevation gain to my friends.

with the elevation correction auto calibration on, it was well out previously.  Only half the elevation gain.

  • Yeah I c the pics.  That's what my 1040 was doing.  It was displaying all good data on the graphs but the text on the data screen wasn't displaying correctly.  It was weird.  That's why I deleted everything related to elevation including "grade" and of course the Garmin IQ app.  And all of a sudden it was ok. ? ? ? I have no idea what happened.  I was willing to do a factory reset but wanted to try wverything before that.  That would suck setting up all my data screens.  I hope this helps. I worked for me,  for now. I don't  know what I did so it might happen again and I won't have any answers.  Good luck
