Intensity Minutes AGAIN

Disappointed that the intensity minutes syncing problem still hasn't been fixed since a major update to FW17.26

I'm using a FR245 as well as the Edge 1040 and if I complete an activity with the FW245 the intensity minutes update to Connect and also sync to the 1040.
But, if I complete an activity on the 1040 the activity minutes are increased on the 1040 but they do not sync to Connect and then onto the FW245.

The only way to reliably record intensity minutes when using the 1040 is to also wear the FW245 (No need to record an activity but just wear it.)

Has anyone managed to find a work around to get intensity minutes working and syncing on the 1040 without the need to also wear a watch?

  • - We would not expect HR data from the Edge to fill in the timeline unless you are using a HRM that has the ability to pair with the Garmin Connect App or you would need to use a wearable to track this data.

This is outlined in 'Why Is There a Gap in My All Day Graph?' in this FAQ: How Does Heart Rate Data Display in Garmin Connect?

  • Kinda strange because it ussually works like that.

    see, straight from edge device:

  • Ok. Its sort of working again for me.

I leave the watch at home and just record the ride using the 1040. On completion I let the 1040 sync and then check the intensity minutes have updated on Connect, if not I initiate a manual sync on the 1040 witch seems to force the update.
You can see from the gap on graph in screen shot below that I don't but the watch on until after a cool down and shower  I then put the watch on and allow it to sync.

I think it is important to make sure that the 1040 has sync'ed and update Connect before allowing the watch to sync which might override the workout on the 1040.

Not ideal but it is a work around until a prober fix

  • I think is not relevant. Remove your watch from this equation and you will see.
I do the same, ride only with Edge, after ride I wait to sync and once it is done I check GC and then you see if you have Intensive Minutes or not. Sometimes I have every data (minutes, HR) sometimes don't.

I sync my Watch after all this + shower ;)

  • I diable the GC connection Bluetooth on my fenix7 watch when I ride with the 1040 and only enable it well after the ride is over. This improved the sutuation a lot but not today. I noticed the watch settings also have auto upload with wifi to I wonder if random watch uploads via wifi are not screwing this around? I will try it with auto upload via wifi going in to the future.

  • It worked for a a couple of weeks but now broken AGAIN, was it ever fixed or was I just lucky?

Last 2 rides no intensity minutes on connect. My 1040 is showing 520 for the week but Connect is only 105 recorded from 2 walks on my watch

  • Well, I use the Garmin Venue 2 and had the same problems. But I read a solution somewhere that worked for me since then:

    1) I switch off the Phone connection / Bluetooth on the watch well before I start.

    2) I do not wear the watch during my ride

    3) I do the ride with my Polar Verity Sense coupled to my 1040. So no Garmin HR sensor.

    4) When I come home I sync the 1040 (as I had many issues with the phone connection I switch off Wifi on the Edge before I ride. After coming home I switch it on and manually sync via Wifi.Otherwise it takes forever).

    5) After Garmin Connect shows the new activity from the ride I now always have the intensity minutes of my ride. That has worked >20 times now flawlessly.

    6) After I see the intensity minutes in my Garmin Connect app I reestablish the connection of the Venue 2

Side note. I need to wear the Venue 2 on the days I ride. If not, resting heart rate will be set to a value close to the average of the ride. This will increase your fitness age not by years but decades! I don't wear it 24/7.

And here's my theory: the data for 24/7 HR is stored in a different place than the HR of the ride. After finishing your ride the first device that syncs will fill that space. If your watch is first and did not record HR, it'll fill that very time-space with zeros as I did not wear it. Hence, no Intensity minutes as they are derived from the HR stream the the watch typically fills, which is now empty. If there is no (zero) data filled (because the watch is offline) the Edge 1040 will fill that very space with the HR it monitored throughout the ride.

    I hope that helps.

  • Also did this with my Fenix 7 and 1040. Fenix 7 BT off and wifi off when I ride and synch 1040 first when I got home. Worked great for about 10 synchs now it works randomly. Sometimes reporting half the intensity minutes of my ride...1040 auto paused for coffee break half way...so gees maybe auto pause is a issue? Goes through stages of working well...

  • I deliberately put the watch offline first and then switch on the Edge with at least 5min in between. My auto pauses are typically only a few second (traffic light) or a few minutes. But maybe I was only lucky so far.
