Wearing watch while cycling with edge

Hello,

When I'm out cycling with my Edge 1040, the Forerunner 965 watch keeps warning me about "Abnormal heart rate". It seems that it only happens sometimes, but I can't identify any rule. I tried to initiate a cycling workout on the watch as well, but this generates duplicate activities. What is the correct way to use the two devices together?

  • Aren't the heart rate thresholds configurable in Settings > Notifications & Alerts > System Alerts > Abnormal Heart Rate Alerts? Just turn them off or adjust the thresholds.

I usually start the activity on both my Edge 1040 and my Forerunner 965. I use my Edge to record my rides (there is less of a chance that random button presses will create nonsensical laps or stop my activity), but activity mode on my Forerunner seems to make the heart rate recording more accurate (it connects to my strap or seems to use a more precise mode of optical recording if I don't use a strap) for 24/7 tracking. Then I save the activity on the Edge and discard it on the Forerunner. As far as I can tell this keeps the activity log and training load estimates clean. I am not sure about things like intensity minutes or various totals, as I don't care about those.

  • The heart rate alert thresholds are fine as they are configured. It wouldn't make sense to configure them to values above the workout values, let alone deactivate them. In this situation, the best solution would be to start recording the cycling activities on both devices and at the end choose the one I want to keep.

I would mention here the disadvantages:
    1. The uncertainty of the calculation method for: intensity minutes, calories, hydration, recovery time, etc.
    2. Battery consumption both on the recording devices and the sensors involved.

If you still end up using two devices for recording, does anyone know if there is an application that combines the two .fit files to consolidate the data? There will certainly be differences from time to time and it is usually obvious which set of values is wrong.

  • To combine fit files you can use this page: https://gotoes.org/strava/index.php

I usually left my watch at home for charging when riding.

  • I track my rides on the Edge 1040, but I broadcast my heart rate from a Tactix 7 to the Edge. I don't track activities on both devices simultaneously. I haven't had any issues, and I do have the abnormal heart rate alerts enabled.

  • Analysis of what happened last time:

it was a 12-hour ride and I used a chest strap. In the first 4 hours there were no alerts. I was riding in zones 2-3 during this interval.

After that I stayed mostly in zone 1 and 5 alerts were triggered a few hours apart.

I assume the watch does a pretty good job of detecting your activity, but when you slow down as fatigue sets in, it starts to get confused from time to time.

There doesn't seem to be any communication between the bike computer and the watch that fails, but I can't be sure of that.
