ANT+ or Bluetooth? Trying to set up new Edge 1040 - new to Garmin

I have read a few posts about connection issues and I am not sure if this is tied to firmware 16.13 as my unit was at that version before I added sensors.

I have 2 bikes, a Giant road bike with the RideSense cadence and speed sensor and a Specialized MTB with a Bontrager Interchange Digital Combo Sensor - both have ANT+ and Bluetooth.

I bought a brand new Edge 1040 yesterday.

I haven't taken either bike for an actual ride yet with the new Edge, so I can't tell if there are problems during longer rides, but trying to determine what would be the best way to connect?

At the moment, I can't get a cadence reading from the Interchange sensor, though the speed seems to be working. The RideSense seemed to only work (speed AND cadence) after I connected it using both ANT+ and Bluetooth? Then I was getting frustrated trying to get these connected, so I connected them all with both ANT+ and Bluetooth. It seems like the ANT+ Interchange connection is connecting and disconnecting pretty frequently. I have tried deleting and reconnecting all of the sensors repeatedly.

I never had issues like this with the Polar unit, so I never had to look into whether one protocol was better than the other. Or is that not the issue and it is a firmware issue? Can I download and roll back if it is likely firmware?

Thanks!

  • Hii, I have the giant ridesense and added mine very quickly. I span my wheels up when pairing (on a stand) and once found just added them, they have worked flawlessly since so afraid only thing I can advise with the ridesense is to change the battery if it’s getting old or delete it off the Garmin then follow what I did and see if the 1040 finds them, might take a few spins of the wheels.  I don’t have Bluetooth enabled at all as have no need. Search on here on how to roll back the firmware but I ride the giant 1st and see if that’s all working. Just eliminate one thing at a time. The 1040 is a great unit when you’ve got it setup. Kind regards Jon
