Navigation screen questions

I am a new 1040 owner coming from a 530. Tried navigating a course for the first time yesterday. I had created the course using Garmin Connect (web) and sent it to the 1040. Overall, navigation worked fine, but I noticed a couple of things were different than when navigating courses on the 530. Note that the 1040 has both 'Turn Guidance' and 'Course Points' enabled.

First, when the course point alert screen pops up, there are two data fields displayed at the bottom of the screen (IIRC, they were 'Elevation' and 'Time to Point.' Unlike similar fields on other data screens (like the built-in map screen), I can't find a way to edit that screen and change those fields.

Second, the 530 always displayed a screen during course navigation that showed all the course points, which I could use to scroll to see what was coming up. I'm not seeing that screen on the 1040 and can't figure out how to create/enable it.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on these two things?

I was also surprised to see a virtual partner on the map screen. Some Googling led me to discover I can't turn it off, but the common advice seems to be to set the VP pace to something very slow or fast and that will effectively accomplish the same thing. Any other thoughts from more experienced 1040 users?

Thanks for the help!

  • So a few of things.

If you sent the course from GC to the 1040 it will not contain any turn guidance course points. Only mainly added course points will show up. Garmin Connect looks to see if the device you are loading the course to supports turn guidance. If it does it will not add course points for turn instructions to the course file.

So the pop-up screen sounds like the turn guidance page and not a course point page. Elevation does not sound correct on that page. I would expect distance and time.

When you set the 1040 up did you import the activity profiles or did you build them on the unit?

If you want to post the course file here I can check if it contains any course points.

  • Thanks for the quick reply. I normally use RwGPS for route creation, but decided to give GC a try. Curious ... instead of sending the course directly to the 1040, if I downloaded the FIT (or TCX) file and copied it to the device manually, would anything change?

I have two files for you to look at, but I can't see how to post them here. First is the course as created and saved in GC. Second is (mostly) the same course a friend had created in RwGPS. Curious if there is a difference re: course points.

Thanks again for the quick assist!

  • When you are doing post you should see a menu option at the bottom of the posting widow that has an insert option.

  • Neither of those files containing any course points.

  • Thanks for checking. So as not to bug you with testing various course files, can you explain what you're looking for? I can play around and inspect more files.

On a related note, both files I attached earlier were FIT files. Might TCX files contain the course points I'm wanting?

The pop-up screen is likely the turn guidance screen, as you said. I can't remember the left-most data field that was displayed, but the right one was almost certainly Time to Point. Do you know how to edit this screen?

  • The turn pop-up screen is not configurable.

The FIT files are binary files so need to be unpacked. There are tools for doing this. I use the FITSDK from www.thisisant.com.

The course points have their own record type. Here is an example.

  • Thanks again for your help. It doesn't make sense that the turn guidance screen is nonconfigurable. Time to submit a feature request!
