Smart trainer gear ratio on Edge 1040 for Wahoo Kickr

Hello everyone!

Today when i started fallowing a workout plan with my Edge 1040 and Wahoo Kickr v6, I realized that I was barely keeping up with the power when i was riding with the larger chainring and smallest sprocket at high cadence (the simulated gradient was 0% at all times).

So i thought maybe my smart trainer gear ratio could be off. Which value should be chosen as this ratio varies as the gears are changed? I have 30/48t on the chainring and 11/34t in the casette.

There are some contradicting ideas about how to set this ratio. Some say that it is the ratio of the bigger chainring to the smallest sprocket, whereas some others say that it is the ratio of the smaller chainring to the sprocket in the middle. o_O

Any help will be highly appreciated to sort this out to choose the right value for the smart trainer gear ratio,

Cheers!

  • Is the Zwift Hub (I just bought a One) setting the great ratio automatically? Like others have stuff, I'm scratching my head on what this is for. Obviously it changes as you shift virtual/physical gears.

Trying to get my distance in Garmin closer to Zwift which, given power and time, seems much closer to my outdoor rides.

  • I know this doesn't help user using the Wahoo KICKR trainer, but I use the Kickr Snap and the 1040 is the best solution for controlling the trainer when using the Kickr Snap. Wahoo updated their iOS app and now it`s not really user not friendly. With the 1040, I can select a ride I did outside and run the route and the 1040 controls the Snap perfectly.  I do not use a training app, like Zwift, so having the 1040 work this well is awesome. You can scroll to the map screen while riding and it shows the outside route like you rode as it follows the map, you can see where you are compared to where you were outside when riding. The grade adjustments are very accurate. It`s nice that I can load a train on any route I have ran and stored on the 1040. The only thing the 1040 cannot compensate for is the headwinds. So, for me using a Kickr snap, the 1040 is the go-to device for controlling the Snap.
