Re-attaching the USB port cover on 1040

The USB port cover came off the second day I used my 1040 and I can't figure out how to re-insert the rubber bit that connects the cover to the unit.
Can anyone suggest a way to reattach the cover?
Also, if I ride without the cover, can the unit get water damage?
