1040 v16.11 has bricked all my sensors

Last night post ride i was prompted to update my 1040 Solar to v16.11. Post update and my morning commute could not find my garmin speed/cadence or MK2i heart rate.
i deleted both and the 1040 could not see them to re-add.
i full shut down the device and restarted it and i still cant connect to HR or cadence/speed.
jumping on my trainer right now and the 1040 cant see the Wahoo Kickr or Garmin pro HR strap.
at this point I'm convinced that this update has bricked the ant/ble capabilities of my 1040.
anyone else having this issue?

  • My Garmin 1040 updated at the end of my ride today. I just checked my bike and it looks like there is no problem with sensors.

What I'd really like to know is if I can go back to using my Speed Sensor 2 with firmware 4.10. I couldn't before because my Garmin kept going into pause mode while moving at speed, which means it stops collecting speed/distance/etc data. I have been using a different Speed Sensor 2 that's still on firmware v2.30 that works correctly, but I keep getting nagged by my 1040 to update it (which fails anyway...that update only works using the phone app and BT <roll eyes>), and apparently there is no way to set the Garmin to stop nagging: I want to file for a divorce!

  • Thanks we appreciate your posting here and also understand you are limited in what you can say and do. Make sure the developers are aware that this issue (or very similar) was reported on a number of the 16.xx betas but it is my view that it has also been evident in the 15.24 and earlier releases. While I don't get sensor connection issues on the road, (I only have speed and cadence), I have been getting disconnections on my Tacx Flow & Flux trainers specifically to the resistance control unit much more with the 14.x & 15.x releases, now almost every indoor ride, the resistance drops to zero, the grade, cadence and power change as expected but the speed goes up as there is no resistance, I end up zooming up 10% grades at mid 30kph, very flattering to my ego but not very realistic and very annoying from a training point of view.

Frankly we don't understand why hundreds if not thousands of reports of sensor connection issues don't result in a fix or if we are all wrong in what we think we see then perhaps Garmin could post an explanation telling us what WE are doing wrong, thanks.

  • My ride was fine today. In fact, 16.11 apparently fixed the bug where my Speed Sensor 2 at firmware v4.10 would keep causing the 1040 to pause the ride while I was still riding at speed. So this is an improvement for me, fixing a very annoying bug (I had to use a different Speed Sensor 2 and keep from updating it).

  • Yep.  Has happened on both rides so far since 16.11.  Got the device to recognise sensors when I played around between rides, but sure enough same problem on the next ride.

  • The beta meant to address this has started rolling out and is currently at 20%. Information can be found here

For users who do not wish to participate in the beta program, this will be moved to production very soon, barring any unforeseen concerns.

  • My 1040 is total failure after installation 16.11.

    just useless

  • Agreed - I've found the Edge 1040, since new around 8 months ago, has been the first Garmin of many that consistently struggles with reliable sensor connection. In my case, with a number of sensors across various bikes and long duration rides (10hr+), it's almost a certainty that after any startup or stop-break-restart one of the sensors won't automatically reconnect - the only variable seems to be which sensor.. seems to be fairly consistent across different bikes (eg. always the power meter on one, always the x on another etc) until something changes (a new sensor pairing, a firmware update, a configuration change) and then the same pattern continues but with a different sensor regularly failing to reconnect. Though each time they can be manually reconnected without issue. So now part of my "getting going again" routine includes a manual sensor check / reconnection.

All my other Garmin's: pair a sensor once, it then just works (apart from radar/lights - these have always been a special case!). On the rare occasion a sensor was missing it means the battery had died so needs changing. Simple.

Part of me hopes this currently being looked into issue is related, and therefore all will be fixed, though I could also see how it could be something entirely separate. Fingers crossed for improvement either way.

  • The sensors in my bike connect without any problems, at least in the case of gravel (Sigma Speed, Garmin Cadence, Grmin HRM Dual and Garmin Varia Radar RTL515 and Bontrager ION 200 RT). I do not know how it will be in the case of a road bike where Di2 and Vector 3 sensors are also available. Activity is not synchronized via the wifi network and the mobile version of Connect Garmin. Synchronization is done by connecting the cable to the PC and synchronizing via Garmin Express. However, one of the most irritating unsolved issues in over a dozen updates and for at least a year now is the disappearance of IQ data fields when starting an activity. GARMIN DO SOMETHING WITH IT!!!
