Have an original 1030 , looking to upgrade to 1040 non solar

Have an original 1030 , looking to upgrade to 1040 non solar . Any feed back on really noticeable differences with routing while out and screen clarity ( reading what I can find it looks like 1040 is using the same screen as the base 1030 but with improved touch capability ) I ride road , gravel , trails and the odd city )

  • if touch capability is a big reason in your mind for the switch - last year, in April I switched from Edge830 to 1030+. In November, I switched from 1030+ to 1040 non-solar. I did not observed any big difference in screen response which would have made me decided to switch.

On the not so many outside activities done with 1040(winter time does not allow too many) I would say I have a very personal feeling the screen is a bit brighter and nicer under full sun conditions. And the colors look nice on it

  • Cheers . Have you noticed if routing is more accurate and if you go off route is it quick to tell you ? . I find off-road my 1030 has a few issues if on the actual correct route or not . Eg wrong side of a field boarder . Was hoping the 1040 was more accurate.. I know the 1030plus had a processor upgrade and I believe the 830 had the same processor as the 1030plus so the 1030 was slower ( same as 820 I presume )

  • Yes, touch its a little bit responsive due to the better cpu

also contrast its better on 1040 vs 1030, and battery life is improved, and design is sleek

besides that, I like training suggestions,

  • Still own a 1030 also (and still a 1000). For me the 1040 is better in a number of areas. You’ve only got to read this forum though and realise everyone has a different opinion on what they see as important.  Some people find knowing the exact gradient is important.  I rely on looking forward and how hard I’m working!

For me these are the areas I find are better.

    1) my 1030 regularly crashed. Often on power on from standby, sometimes during navigation, sometimes just mid ride with no navigation. It would need a hard reset which it would either do itself or need to be forced. Now I have seen it a few times on the 1040, but with the 1030 it was happening a lot

    2) connected with above, sometimes I’d come to use the 1030 and it had drained the battery overnight. I’m sure it was something to do with it locking up and staying on.

    3) I know I’m not the only one but one of the tabs on the back broke (hit a pot hole). Basically it is clear the heavier units of the 1030 size are not up to the job with the plastic mount. So much is this a problem that as far as I know two companies provide a stick on solution.  The 1040 has metal tabs!

    4) battery life. Apart from 2) the 1030 was not that bad.  Easily doing a 140 mile ride.  The 1040 is in a different league lasting multiple days. Long term not having to charge the battery so often is good as it will last longer

    5) starting a navigation course is way faster. The faster processing power of the 1040 is clear.

    6) some nice new features like stamina.  Couple of new features and screens I personally like.  Some may end up on older units, some I think can’t.

All considered I’m pleased with the 1040. It hasn’t been perfect and has had a few issues. But for me at least just the first 4 on the list have been big bonuses. You could argue for the first 3,  I would still have a perfectly good 1030 as I shouldn’t have those issues with it, and I’d agree!  But for now it’s consigned to back up.

  • I purchased the 1040 non solar . It arrived today so have only set it up , but not used it yet . First impressions is screen is more touch sensitive and it’s a lot quicker loading up and also the menus . Tomorrow is my first try and it will be an MTB ride .

  • Another point I’d forgot about. The original 1030 touchscreen in winter was more or less non functional with most gloves. The 1040 screen seems to be a lot better in that respect.
