Question regarding map usage

I'm trying to ride every street in my city. Strava's Personal Heat Map will record where I've been. But while I'm out riding, I use the map on my Edge 1040. The streets are generally black, with some being gray. When I ride a particular street, the history line in also black, so I can't clearly see when I've done all the streets in an area. In my Road activity profile, I say my history line should be yellow, but I guess since I am not navigating, this doesn't apply.

Is there anything I can do to get more assistance from the map on the Edge 1040?

As far as I know (quite sure) that showing the history line is independent of navigating or not. I load my Course and START riding most of the time without TBT navigation and my history line is showing correctly (in black in my case). The Timer of course should be running to show the history line.
My device is an Edge Explore 2 (similar software as the 1040), but all my Edge devices behaved as described above, so I'm quite convinced the 1040 should behave similarly.

The history is independent from navigation (you get the history with or without navigation).
