Auto-Pause engages while riding at speed

This is a new one for me today. Numerous times – while riding at speed – my 1040 kept spontaneously engaging Auto-Pause as if I had come to a full stop (I didn't): on-off-on-off, rinse and repeat. Several times it wouldn't even disengage Auto-Pause. In fact, it was stuck in Auto-Pause when I started my ride. At one point in my ride, I just forced a hard reboot of the 1040, and then it seemed OK...for a bit. I finally had to edit my profile and turn off Auto Pause to finish my ride and have the last bit recorded, which is not really how I want to deal with this.

Any ideas? I just now updated to 15.24 so maybe that will help. I was on 15.23.

  • If you're using a wheel speed sensor it might be an issue with that and you could try removing it and relying on GPS to see what happens.   Also, what auto-pause speed threshold is set?  You might try changing that to see if there is an effect.  Other than that and barring anybody else coming up with a better suggestion, I'd do a factory reset.

  • Thanks. I’ll check the Speed Sensor. The one I was using just had a firmware update: 4.00 -> 4.10. I wonder if that’s a problem. I have another one that’s still on 2.30 that I’ll ride with today. Otherwise, I’ll disable the sensor. I’m not convinced I really need it anyway.

  • I do find the sensor beneficial.  I have them on all my bikes, incl mtb.   They improve auto pause by removing inherent GPS position noise that can trigger or un-trigger autopause at low speeds.  I find setting a manual autopause speed of ~5kph when using a sensor to function reliably.  Also, with the tortuous tracks encountered mtbing, the speed sensor will provide more accurate distance and better grade info.   That said, many get along fine without them.

  • I don't mountain bike, so that part isn't an issue for me. I just ride paved road and gravel, so I could probably do without the speed sensors altogether. I have not had a problem with Auto Pause when not using a speed sensor, not ever.

Anyway, what changed for me was that the Speed Sensor 2 on my road bike had a firmware upgrade and that's when the trouble started yesterday. For today's ride I swapped it out for the SS2 off my gravel bike that is still on firmware 2.30. It worked just fine.

However, with firmware 2.30 that means the 1040 now goes into perpetual nag mode, asking me to update the firmware to 4.10, which it fails to do anyway (I can only get that to work from the Connect app on my iPhone).

So between the Auto-Pause fail and the firmware update nagging on the 1040 I think I'm going to revert to my old 1st generation Speed Sensor. That was never a problem. I'll put my two Speed Sensor 2 on my back road bike I never ride, and my single-speed that I ride but not as often. Or just not use them at all.

  • Have you tried to change the battery for the sensor which updated from 4.0 to 4.10? Maybe this took too much battery and this generates the wrong behavior of the speed sensor.

  • I had the same problem while “riding “ on my Taxc today. Spontaneous it autopaused while still pedalling it happened 5 times in one hour training session. I installed 15.24 today so i think it’s a bug Beetle of this version. I have a 1040 solar. So i think it’s not the speed sensor. It didn’t happen on the previous fw versions

  • It happened to me with 15.23, so I do not think it's a bug specific to 15.24.
