Edge 1040 Solar 15.23: corrupted data storage???

I connected my device today in order to get updates from Garmin Express. Garmin Express downloaded 15.24 to the device and I ejected the GARMIN mass storage device, but given that the battery charge was low at the moment, the update was not initiated. When the screen turned on, I noticed that my recent activity was reading as 0km, 0h00m, but the map preview was accurate. I tried looking it up in the history, but when I tapped on the ride in question, I got a "Failed to load ride details" message. I also noticed that my custom maps were gone.

I tried reconnecting the device back to the computer, but the GARMIN volume did not display any folders for solid 10 minutes. After that, it displayed the typical root folders, but the Garmin folder was empty. I connected it to a different computer and only after changing the OS to Linux I was able to see the file system properly. Here's what I found:

  • Some img files in the Garmin folder, including my custom maps were reading as having the size of 0 bytes
  • Most of my earlier activity fit files were also reading 0 bytes

When disconnected, the loading screen had some weird symbols in the top section.

Later, Garmin got enough charge, detected the update and tried to install it, but it appears to have not worked. Garmin Express thinks the device is running 15.24 while the device thinks it's running 15.23.
