Why do I get an e-mail ad for an update I can't download?

I got an e-mail from Garmin this morning touting the new features added (past tense) to my Edge 1040 series. The subject line is "Your Edge Has New Features". It mentions software version 15.23. I came to this forum earlier today and didn't even see a post from Garmin staff talking about this update yet (one was posted 2 hours ago). Update rollout is currently listed as 20%.

Both Garmin Connect and Garmin Express say my device is up to date with version 14.50.

This is a disconnect between marketing and reality. I think Garmin should allow updates for people who actively check for an update. There should be a way to force the update for us enthusiasts eager to try things. In my experience, most people drag their feet on device updates because they find it a hassle. They will keep running old software/firmware even if it's a security risk rather than spend a few minutes to update their device. The people who want the update right away tend to be people who are better equipped to note and report potential bugs or problems with the update.

  • That's the joke garmin is playing on their customers. It's not funny any more.

  • First world problems.

    • Garmin provides the updates slowly. Not sure why. Maybe, it's to make sure servers don't get overloaded. Maybe, it's a way of making sure a problem doesn't hit every one at the same time.

    • The emails are sent out from a different department than the department managing the releases. It's probably not worth coordinating when the emails are sent with who gets the releases. (People might not even turn on their devices when the update is first available to them).

    • There's a beta program. Usually, the last beta is the same as the released version. So, if you want the update "right away", use the beta program.

    • Probably, more than enough "enthusiasts eager to try things" downloading the released version. It would be more useful for these people to be in the beta program anyway.

    • It's usually only a couple of days.
  • Owning a $999 watch is a first world problem to begin with. All of the issues, big and small, posted on the Garmin forums are relatively minor first world problems with devices that are arguably luxuries....

Your points are fair, although I disagree that their different departments needn't be talking to each other. I've thought about joining the beta program but thought that the additional risk of things not working might not be worth it.

  • These changes are all in the current public beta (15.22): Enrolling in and Learning About Garmin Beta Software Program

As for our Public Maintenance Release software updates, these follow a phased rollout (20%/50%/100%). We are currently at 50% and this software will go to 100% tomorrow afternoon.

I apologize for the inconvenience and the confusion we have caused.

  • Call me “old fashioned” but I did prefer the previous numbering pattern where production releases had a nice round number (X.X0), “15.23” just has a beta feel to it (maybe there is a hint there?)

ps: connected via express on a computer and it dropped 15.23 onto the 1040 immediately , this route almost always works for me without any delay, I must be regarded as “special” by Garmin. I will though wait a few days before installing to see comments from early adopters, in case it’s a dud?
