I cannot find anything in the multi page skinny manual about how to remove the unit from the mount.

If you use a regular 1/4 turn mount, turn the unit 1/4 in either direction and it will come off. If you use a mount that supports the external battery Power Pack, the unit cannot turn on those but the have a lever to lock it into place so undo that lever and the unit will be free.
I also was wondering about this same question. After installing the out front mount on my bike, I did the quarter turn to install the 1040 on the mount. When I went to remove it, I turned it CCW a quarter turn and the resistance to turning was considerably higher than my 1030 / out front mount combination was. I looked online and in the manual but saw no mention of any special method of "unlocking" prior to turning so I just upped the turning force and it did eventually turn and disconnect from the mount. However, there were a couple of plastic shavings that the metal bottom of the 1040 mount removed from the out front mount plastic base.
1) Is this normal and expected?
2) Will the 1040 keep removing plastic from the out front mount each time I remove the 1040?
3) Have other 1040 owners had this same thing happen to them?
Maybe after a few mount/dismount cycles the 1040 will stop removing plastic from the out front mount. I only unmounted it one time since I was afraid to repeat for fear of rendering the out front mount incapable securely holding the 1040 unit.
I believe the metal on the back of the 1040 will always shave off the plastic locking lugs. The edges on aluminium are like knife blades and will always cut through the plastic lugs. I have tried a few different brackets including Garmin with the same result. In my view it is a big design flaw.
If you use the Garmin mount with the lock adapter then there is no rotation. You put the Edge in and then moving the locking arm.
Thank you I might look at that. I assume it only works with Garmin Mounts.
It is design to replace the quarter turn mount in the Garmin out front mount. It might another mount, but I don't know that.
