"WPT NEXT" field now supports custom course points names

I have uploaded a premade course to my new 1040, but it automatically generates an alternative pink route (I suposse based on the routing map below) wich bothers, gets in the way, activates map screen with warnings every now and then. Its a mess and I believe it is also responsible for ruining my "Next waypoint" data field (I want it to be the name of the next Course point (self made)" instead of I don't know what meaningless point.

So, is there any way to disable the pink route?

  • There is no data field for name of next course point, only distance to next course point.

Next waypoint name is name of next turn-by-turn indication as generated by the 1040.

  •  you are correct.

Just a short ride but Turn Guidance disabled as usual and course contains Course Points. The "Next WayPoint" data field was populated with the name of  the next Course Point (up to 15 characters) which updated as each Course Point position was passed. Prior to 1040 software 14.20 / 14.50 & on my older 530 this field was always blank so I didn't use it. Hopefully not a "mistake" as this is very useful for users who prefer course points over turn guidance.

Have you sorted out your course point issues?

  • I think they fixed it. I don` t think it is a mistake. It does what it should have always have done. On the Fenix 6 that` s what it does, display the name of the next waypoint.

    Sorry.

L.Rouge , at least your answer with the summary of everything about WPT NEXT field is safe and the post is cleaner now

  •  I noticed you have course points that are named with more than 10 chars. How do you do this.

I create course points in RWGPS and after export the 'name' of these points are always truncated to 10 chars.

  • Yes, the text displayed for the Course Point is the CoursePoint element  "Name" in the .Fit or .TCX file created from RWGPS or other planning site.

If the cue is generated by RWGPS the "name" will generally be the street name for a turn but limited to 10 characters because older Garmins only displayed 10 characters, the 1040 now displays 15 but RWGPS has not changed.

If you have a paid RWGPS membership you can modify the cue and / or create custom cues and these can have longer names.[PS BUT these get truncated to 10 characters when course is exported, will have to ask RWGPS support about this]  Just to confuse things the RWGPS form field that will become the XML Name is called "Notes" and the "Description" field will become the XML "Notes" field

If all else fails you can just edit the TCX XML with a text editor (like Notepad++)

    Hope that helps

ps, you might want to limit the name as the WPT NEXT field text is bigger for shorter names and “street” etc is a bit redundant anyway.

  • Thanks for your detailed response. I appreciate all your entries in this forum and have learnt a lot from them.

I do have a paid RWGPS membership (have had for many years). I do create custom cues in RWGPS (mainly for non navigation points like Water, Food, Hut locations, etc). However, whenever I export to TCX the Course Point 'Names' always truncate to 10 Chars. I understand that old/some Garmin devices could only handle 10 chars.

When I saw your screen prints with 'Macleay Street' ,  I thought how is that Thinking

I considered writing some sort of script to run over the exported TCX and transpose 15 chars from the Notes Field over the top of the Name field..   but Im trying to make my life less complicated and just get on with riding my bike Sunglasses

  • "Just riding the bike" is the important bit. I will have to check, I mostly use RWGPS as my club has a club account. I have some courses with greater than 10 character course point names but I might have used another site (use Garmin Connect infrequently, mostly to smooth courses I will use on my indoor trainer and Plotaroute occasionally) or even just edit the XML

  • This is gold. Thanks a lot

  • It works fine except if you enter on an enabled segment. In this case, the roadbook with custom course point distances goes crazy. Once out of the segment, distances are back to normal.
