Charging - always turns on?

I can't imagine it's just me or maybe I just am search-challenged here...

Been very happily using my 1040 pretty much since launch.  The issue I've got is when I go to charge it, it slways powers on.  If I go to turn it off, it nicely turns back off, but seems not to charge.

The only way I've been able to reliably get it to charge is by just leaving it powered on.

Not a showstopper at all.  Little PITA to have to turn my Varia lights off (they turn on when the GPS is on), but that's about it.

This has been a consistent issue since day 1 for me on every firmware revision and is present using multiple charging methods from a computer/USB cable to a direct-plug USB wall charger.

What's the silly thing that I'm missing?

  • It’s not an issue. It’s the way Garmin designed it.

  • Yes, I’m hoping it’s a bug that will be fixed soon. As well as all my connected lights connecting and turning on… I am getting constant Garmin Connect messages on my phone saying “ Garmin Edge found.” And Garmin Edge connection lost.”  And my device is charging in the garage. I have to plug the cable in and then power it off but as someone has mentioned, sometimes it doesn’t charge and the screen is blank but on other occasions it does charge and show up the battery status.

  • Unless you can show me something that backs that up, I'm going to respectfully disagree.  My 1030 and 1030+ didn't do that, and it seems pretty counterproductive to have a device required to be on to charge it?

  • It’s since release. Garmin never addressed this as a known issue even there are a lot of topics here complaining about that.

  • yes, I agree, it's annoying as hell!
It turns on my light network (with all lights blinking), then lose the connection (with a BEEP) because the bike isn't beside, then reconnect to the light network (beep!), then disconnect (beep)...
Same thing for GPS signal, I can get some, so "beep" gps signal acquired, then beep, lost, because, I'm inside!

And, often, there is no way to properly shut it down, the power button doesn't work, all the time, when connected, or it just freezes on the shutdown screen. I have to hold the power button for 10 seconds to force it down.

It's a good thing we don't have to charge it often, it's not a good experience.

  • Have you tried different cables ? It seems to me that your Garmin thinks to be connected to external power unit and then is stays on. When I connect mine to charger by simple USB C cable (dedicated only to charge things) my 1040 goes on, which annoys me, but can be switche off.

  • Of course :)  Multiple different cables (including the Garmin one).  Exact same behavior no matter what cable or what the cable is plugged into (computer, wall charger, etc)

  • You can work around this by changing your lights to turn on only when you starts the ride (press the Start button).

  • Another way around is to charge the lights when you are charging the 1040.  A pain but it works

  • +1

I came here looking to see if this super-annoying problem was fixed in the 1040.

Apparently not, which is another point pushing me away from upgrading.
