Bug? Stop Current Course stuck

Second time this has happend. Garmin 1040 Solar fully updated.

was on a ride today, using a course, got a flat, took Garmin off bike and put in shirt pocket. When I took it out to ride again there was a message at bottom of screen: “Stop Current Course?” with an X and a check mark. No matter which I tapped the message continued to be displayed. Tried several times. Had to finish last 8 miles with part of screen obscured by message. Using my remote button was able to flip through screens so things were still working. Ride recorded normally. Message did not go away until I finished ride with the pause/stop button. See pic.

This happens once before on a long ride. That time I don’t think I tapped anything by accident.

  • You should switch garmin off or into sleep mode before putting it into the pocket. No one knows what could happen on the touch screen in the pocket.

  • yep, same, hit the "X" about a dozen times and it finally went away. Had a lot of very odd problems that ride

"... the 1040 started giving multiple  "Stop Course" messages , I hit the X (for no) about 10 times but it  just then give another message, finally stopped the messages. ..."

  • I don’t think you can do that with an activity in progress but will try next time.

  • definitely you can do that

  • Ok thanks. When this Stop Course screen was displaying I tried this and got message can’t do it while activity in progress. I just tried it. Started a ride and tried shutting off and got result shown in photo. Am I missing something?

  • stop the activity and turn off or go sleep. When you want to resume the activity, just power on and push start button. Then you continue the same activity.

  • got it, thanks, i thought stop the activity meant ending it but now see I can pause then shut off. will do this in the future. still sure the original bug/problem has come up before without putting Garmin in pocket.

  • Yes this is definitely a bug. I had this yesterday for no apparent reason during the ride. I had had the infamous "Route Calculation Error" earlier in the ride, although it kept on with the route. This may have come up before the above error as well, as I had gone off course, but I wasn't watching the screen.

I didn't restart the route guidance after the reboot as I have a Karoo 2, which is far better at navigation. However this bug could be dangerous if you're heading into unknown territory. Garmins are renowned for not picking up the route when trying to start in the middle.

Yes the power-off works, but that's not the point, it's an annoying bug, along with all the others on the 1040.

  • This bugs still exists.

Unfortunately, it cannot be dodged, when it happens, you are screwed, there is no way you can go back - you can answer anything, it goes again and again.

Even when stopped the activity, this is still on, and I was able to save the activity between the 0.2 sec gap between the screens trying to hit the save button many times...
