Why doesn't the Garmin 1040 come with all the topo like Fenix Epix?

I bought a 1040 Solar in Europe and I only have the topo map of Africa... while my Epix contains all the topo of the world.

  • To add to the mystery, my 1040 Solar (also bought in Europe) offers both cycling and topo maps of Africa, but my 1040 non-Solar (also bought in Europe) does not - it only offers a cycling map for Africa.

I find it funny, so here are my wild theories:

    1. It's because Solar is only useful in Africa. As we all know, the solar charging gains are negligible, unless you have Sahara-like sunshine and Sahara-like (lack of) access to the power grid ;-) So Garmin recognised it by adding a topo map of Africa to the Solar version.
    2. It's because topo maps are better for offroad riding, which is particularly useful in Africa due to more limited road and cycling networks. So Garmin gives you a choice between infrastructure-optimised cycling maps and offroad-optimized topo maps for Africa.
    3. In many parts of Africa it's too hot to climb any mountains, so ClimbPro data (which as we know doubles the map size) might not be needed by many riders. Garmin therefore gives you a choice between full data in cycling maps and space savings in topo maps.

Which one is true (if any ;-) we will only know if someone from Garmin can help us understand the difference between their topo maps and cycling maps. Other than the name, which we kind of recognise by now, and addition of ClimbPro data, which I believe only applies to cycling maps. If you have other information (or more wild theories ;-), please share.
