Wishlist: Discard confirmation button should be on the other side of screen (or autosave activity)

I made a rookie mistake today, stopped the ride, pressed the checkered flag, took the unit off and while holding it in my hand I was also removing my front light to get it charged. I went home and realized my activity is gone.

Turns out that when you "accidentally" press Discard the confirmation button appears in the exact same place, just to be accidentally pressed again.

I know it's not a frequent thing, and having done it once I'll pay more attention, but why isn't there an option to autosave an activity, disable "Discard" button (I can delete activity in Connect), or at least the confirmation button to appear on the other side (and it should be a Yes/No, not Discard/Save again where pressing No, would show back the discard/save options - then you could either accidentally save, or get stuck in an infinite loop of pressing Discard->No)

(it was 44km - I only recovered 33 of it partially, because even though I immediately powered off, some log file wrote over the activity file)

Consider it my "feature request", but if you have helpful tips, I'm open to suggestions (I'll now save the trip before removing the unit as long as I remember)

  • Please add me as impact to the case. I would also love a default auto-save or save all feature as previously mentioned. Much easier to delete a ride while at home than in the field. It's easy to accidentally discard, particularly when using gloves. A recycle bin might also be a good solution or an add on.

  • I haven't discarded a ride yet but do agree that it should be harder to discard a ride by accident.  Double touch on a touch screen by mistake is easy and you can't really undo it so accidental discard is much worse than accidental save.  The confirmation screen shouldn't be in the same order to prevent this type of mistake but I would go one further and have the discard button be a smaller touch area than the save button on the confirmation screen.

Or maybe have a swipe touch action on the screen to discard so its even harder to do by mistake.  This also has the advantage of making people think when they see the screen as it requires an action that isn't what you'd expect both from a long term ux perspective and for those used to the current behavior

  • I want to be able to remove the option discart completely. Majority of the time, I want to save the activity. In case I want to delete activity, I am happy to delete after activity is saved. Thanks

  • Please fix this! It is a bug. It is faulty UI design. I've now accidentally discarded 3 rides in the three months I've owned my first Garmin!

Move the confirmation button. Ask me 10 times if I'm really sure. Give me the option to autosave rides or disable the Discard button. Give me a Recycle Bin. I don't care how it's done, but I never want to be given the option to delete any data from my device. Especially not after a long, tiring ride! I can do it via Connect later if I really want to.

  • Sorry, but it is not a bug!

Discard button is black and smaller than Save button. If you press it accidently, you are asked to confirm! Ok, moving the confirm button might be more save. But don‘t remove the Discard button - it is a useful button!

And… how should „autosave“ work? Who should tell your device when you‘re finished?

  • Yes, please, Garmin, add confirmation slider to Discard and also to Save activity. I know, I can merge activities, but it is easy to accidentally press the Save button.

  • Thanks Maeve, please add me to the ticket too.

  • Please also add me to this ticket. It happened to me today and before I knew it I discarded the activity while removing my Edge 1040 for a break... I was gutted.

A better option would be to keep the discarded activities for a few days in a separate trash folder, so there is at least a chance to recover the activity. Filesize should not be an issue anyway.

  • Agree that the Save/Discard flow is broken. Lost an important ride yesterday because I stopped with the hardware button and somehow the ride got deleted without ever consciously pressing Discard. The .fit file is gone and can’t be recovered, although others remain from rides that are now exported and saved. Just save every ride on hardware ‘Stop’ and allow a user to edit/delete the ride with a separate screen flow. AND, dump deleted rides in a folder that is purged oldest first when it gets full. There’s nothing more frustrating to a user than lost data.
