Edge 1040 not always searching for Rally XC200 power meter

I have the Edge 1040 Solar with software version 14.50
The Rally XC200 has firmware version 4.00.

So both hardwares are up to date.

On my Edge 1040 Solar, I realize that the Sensor searching for the Rally XC200 is not always continuously searching like other sensors do. For the Rally XC200, the Edge 1040 will sometime decided to continue to search for it indefinitely (which is good, all other sensors searching are also behave like this, which is desired because once the sensor is wake up or turned on, it immediately detected and connected to the Edge). Whereas at sometime the Edge 1040 will just decide it has search long enough and decided to declare the Rally XC200 sensor as "Disconnected" while other sensors are still being searched continuously.
When the Edge 1040 has declares the Rally XC200 as disconnected, no matter how I wake up my Rally XC200 by spinning the pedal or even riding it, the Edge 1040 will simply not search for it anymore. It will remain in disconnect mode until I manually click into the Rally XC200 sensor page and click Connect manually.

Why is this happening? What trigger the Edge 1040 to stop searching for the Rally XC200 and what trigger it to continuous searching for it? The Edge behavior is completely unpredictable when comes to Rally XC200 connectivity.

  • Anyone from Garmin can help?

  • A few things:

    - I use vector pedals, sometimes they connect quickly, sometimes they take a minute or two...

    - I believe sensors will not connect automatically once an activity is started, you have to get them connected before starting activity. During an activity you can only connect a sensor manually. (at least this is my experience)

So, is it possible sometimes you are starting the activity before the pedals have connected?

  • Hi , thanks for your input. Here are my feedbacks.

    - I have same experience with you regarding time it takes for my Edge 1040 to connect to Rally XC200. Sometime it is almost instantly the moment I turned my pedal, sometime it is a minute or two after I turn my pedal. Regardless, when it does connect, I usually have no complain on the time it takes to establish connection. The problem is when Edge 1040 fails to connect or search the Rally XC200 and declared it as "disconnected", then just stop the searching attempt. Once the Edge 1040 reaches this scenario then I have no choice but to manually connect. Manually connect will always work, just that it is a hassle.

    - I have the habit of check and make sure all sensors are connected to Edge 1040 before I press the "start" button on the Edge. I have never try pressing the "Start" button first before waiting the Edge to confirm connection. So I cannot comment on whether the Edge 1040 will behave the same like what you said or not. However on the part where you said "During an activity you can only connect a sensor manually. ", this is indeed consistent with what I am experiencing so far. If I stop pedaling for some time (5 minutes maybe, a water break, chat, buying croissant, etc) but Edge 1040 still recording, the Rally XC200 will enter into sleep mode by itself. Once XC200 enters sleep mode then it will disconnect from Edge 1040. At this time Edge will keep searching for it (I can see the menu blinking "searching" ).
When I resume pedaling, the XC200 will wake up, it can connect to my phone Garmin Connect via bluetooth by itself without issue, but the Edge 1040 will somehow decided XC200 is disconnected and stops any searching attempt. Once it becomes disconnected I will have to manually connect (all the while Edge still recording ride, never pause or stop recording) .

So in short, i do not start activity before pedals have connected. I always make sure all sensors are connected before pressing the "Start" button.

That does not sound right. Maybe it is a bug? That would be very annoying! Does that always happen? Or only sometimes. On Edge 530 when the pedals go to sleep (at the cafe :-) once you start pedalling again they wake up and automatically re-connect. Rarely, they will disconnect in the middle of a ride (hello Garmin...) but they also will re-connect after a few seconds.

"...- I have the habit of check and make sure all sensors are connected to Edge 1040 before I press the "start" button on the Edge. I have never try..."

You can set "auto calibration" to "on" and that way as as soon as the pedals connect after the Edge is powered on it will pop up the calibration screen. That acts as a little reminder that they are connected. Also good practice to calibrate before every ride to help with consistency. But again, sometimes it will just not pop up the screen and you have to manually calibrate!

Also check that the connection is ANT+ (not bluetooth) under sensor settings screen. There is some perception ANT+ is less likely to have issues...

  • Some people did said that it should be a bug of the Edge 1040 firmware.

Yes it is quite annoying. So far my experience has shown that it happens on every ride. Every time I stop for a short coffee break for about 5 minutes the XC200 will go to sleep mode by default and the Edge 1040 will lost connection, after resume pedaling the Edge 1040 will never pick up the XC200 again, I always have to remember to manually connect the XC200 after a break.

On continuous ride there is no issue, the XC200 never disconnected from the Edge 1040.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did set the calibration to On. But as you said, despite setting it to On, I had experienced the Edge screen does not pop up any reminder to calibrate it, but is rare.

I set the XC200 to connect to Edge 1040 via ANT+, not Bluetooth. So far the setting in there seem fine to me.
Having said that, maybe I should try Bluetooth to see if it still exhibits re-connection difficulty after a break. Nonetheless, ANT+ will always be my preferred connection algorithm.
