Navigation confused by courses with overlap?

I did a course a few weeks ago that went through the same location (a rest stop) three times. After leaving the rest stop for the final time, I was incorrectly routed as if it was my first time through. That is, instead of routing me towards the finish of the ride (I was 3/4 done), I was routed as if I'd only done 1/4. Fortunately, having previously ridden the route, I realized what was happening and the navigation corrected itself when I went the right way. However, I definitely lost some confidence in the navigation!

Here's the route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40622448

If looking at the route, I was told to take a L on Henry Rd instead of continuing straight on E/W Baltimore Rd towards Trevanion Rd.

Any help would be appreciated!

  • It's an old issue (it happened on old units too). The device can't really tell if you if you want to continue or take a shortcut. It generally sorts itself out. Or, if the course gets stuck, you can reload it when you are on the correct leg.

These sorts of situations aren't exactly common.

One way to avoid it is to break the route up.

  • Thanks for the response. It's my first Edge, so a new problem to me ;-). Last year I rode the same route and don't recall my old Wahoo ROAM having an issue with it. It doesn't seem to me like it should be a problem - especially since it actively told me to turn, vs just going straight (and definitely not a shortcut - it would have added at least 25 miles). I can see how it would be ambiguous if I'd started the course midway, on an overlapping portion, but having ridden the whole thing from the start, I would have thought the distance would make things clear.

Generally speaking it may not be common, but I brought it up because I've got another ride coming up this weekend where the route will double-back on itself (also not my route) and I don't want to have to second guess the navigation.

  • The issue shouldn't generally be the route crossing. It's going to be more of an issue when the same road segment is used more than once. I suspect that it's more likely to occur if you stop (or go very slowly) in such a place.

The devices can have issues picking the wrong pass on the segment. My impression is that the problem used be more common with older units.

That course is unusually complicated. Splitting it would make things more reliable and easier to recover (if you needed to reload the route).

  • You can simplify the route. The rest stop uses Cuesheet to prompt on the main road, jump out of the Cuesheet (rest stop) and then leave the route and enter the rest stop. Watching Google Street View beforehand can also reduce errors.
