Auto pausing on hills

When riding up hill, my Edge 1040 repeatedly auto-pauses, then quickly resumes. When this occurs I'm usually going 6 to 9 mph. When it happens, I see my displayed speed jump to 0 mph, but this may be a result of the auto-pause, and not actually leading it. This happens reliably going up steeper hills, and can occur multiple times on a single climb. Auto pause works as I'd expect otherwise.

  • Software Version 14.50
  • Speed through Garmin Speed Sensor 2 w/ firmware version 4.0
  • Power and cadence through Assioma Duo Shi spindles
  • Road bike profile
  • Auto pause setting set to "When Stopped"

Any ideas?

  • IDK if yours is different than the usual problem but if using GPS for speed, GPS position noise can show you moving when you're not and so also show you stopped when you're not. This is more problematic in areas of poor GPS reception due to foliage, tall buildings, etc.   The fix is to use a speed sensor.  Also, "when stopped" is a little ambiguous as how does the Edge know your stopped?  It must be using some threshold, but not one you know or can adjust.  When using auto pause with a wheel sensor, I set it to a speed of 5 or 6 kph.

  • He’s using a speed sensor he said. I’d remove and re pair the speed sensor and make sure it’s working.

also anyone with any concern for power data hygiene should turn auto pause off and leave it off. That’s the best solution.

  • I also use a Garmin speed sensor and autopause "when stopped". This works flawlessly!
    1) make sure the speed signal is coming from the sensor: with the bike stationary, turn the wheel where the sensor is mounted and see if a speed is displayed.
    2) if the sensor is mounted on the rear wheel, put it on the front wheel!

  • Also check that the wheel circumference looks correct if it is configured to auto

  • Good point, i had the case where sensor didn't work well on the rear wheel. Magnetic interferences ?

  • When riding up hill, my Edge 1040 repeatedly auto-pauses, then quickly resumes. When this occurs I'm usually going 6 to 9 mph.

I have noticed the same problem, but my speed is quite normal on flat road (say, about 25kph) - and is nowhere near any "auto pause parameters". Someone has suggested to use the Garmin speed sensor 2 (MORE money!!!!) on top of the already £520 device. so that it is not using GPS to determine speed. I will give it a try.......

  • Sounds like we’re seeing the same issue and I’ve confirmed that the speed is reporting from my Speed 2 sensor (thanks mcinner1). I’ve taken their suggestion and moved the sensor to the front wheel. We’ll see if that makes a difference, but this feels more like a computer issue.

  • I saw this a lot last month in Scotland. For me it happened when doing long steep climbs 8% - 12%.  I can be spinning in granny gear, but fall below the threshold horizontal speed.  This is a real problem because TSS is then not recorded either and make a mess of recovery calculations. Perhaps most annoying is my climb of bealach na bar is not recorded as one climb!  If you pause on a climb like that you never get fast enough to get started again. I understand there has to be a threshold, but it way too high for these situations. in the mountains its common to be riding at walking pace.

  • If you care enough to care about TSS you should know that auto pause already screws your data.

just turn auto pause off sheesh you guys

  • @cycleanalyze  sheesh :  TSS is a function of power and time. if power is zero what has auto pause go to do with it ?
