14.20 Following a course - navigation to start: how to stop navigation

Dear all,

I started at home by selecting a course to follow, the starting point of this course was in about 6km, I selected navigate to the start.

I did not follow the suggested way, I went other ways.

Route Recalculation is set to Automatic - but I had not the feeling Edge is doing a useful re-calculation. I wanted to end the navigation to the starting point, but when I tapped the map it shows only "Pause Navigation"  or "Resume Navigation" - where is the "Stop Navigation"?

Later, when I was already on the course slightly after the start point - Edge was still trying to send me somewhere - I went back to start the course again:

After a while Edge accepted my tapping on the check symbol and started the follow the course.

  • Yes it’s pathetic! The 1000 had this on the map screen, the new 8 year upgrade to the 1040 is a retrograde device in numerous areas. Basically you have to swipe down from the top and if you are navigating one of the screens will allow you to stop navi. I have seen on 12.6 that if you tap the map screen while riding the Pause will come and Stop may quickly flash up, probably not long enough to actually tap it.

I have also noticed that if you actually stop and tap the Map screen you may be able to Stop navi as that option comes up as opposed to Pause when you are riding.

Garmin prefers to play around with Solar and all the Fitness features and basic functionality is totally neglected.

I have a 1040 but am so disappointed with that I have bought a Karoo 2. (Although as far as stop navi it is equally pathetic).

Yes I also want to stop navi from the map screen with a minimum of taps and no swiping into other areas. Unfortunately Garmin programmers do not ride bikes and are totally unaware of what real bikers want for functionality.

  • They had this pretty well figured out on my 820.  There's a red X on the bottom left of the map when navigating.  Tap that, then confirm to end nav.

  • 1040 has different software UiX than your 820

  • Yep.  That was my point.  The 1040 UI is inferior in regard to being able to stop nav.  They had it pretty well figured out on the 820.

  • Swipe down from the top to show the main widget. Then swipe RIGHT to the navigation widget. There you can STOP COURSE and/or start a new course.

  • Yes , but he was discribing diferent process, he want to stop navigation to the starting of the course, and not the course itself, and Yes , I did not see “stop navigation” in that case

  • Yes, I want to stop navigation to start of the course, I do not want to stop the entire course and then need to find it again...

But thank you for the hint with the main widget - when I am again lost in the loop Pause Navigation and Resume Navigation on the map screen I will try the widget.

  • I down loaded a course in Belgium, and it kept brining me back to the start/finish point and seemed incapable of sending me on the course. I then chose a loop course and once again it kept brining me back to the start /finish without following the course. I think part of the problem was that it was an old city with narrow streets and relatively tall buildings and it c

It could not inform me where to go to get out of the city.

I'm somewhat relieved that others have similar problems and it's not me being stupid, it's particularly annoying that I specially bought the 1040 for this trip as it has cycle maps of all regions of the world and it was absolutely useless to me. Ended up asking directions and using the compass on my Fenix!

    I hope it improves.
