Garmin Edge 1040 and garmin smartwatch ?

Hi, im happy owner of Edge 1040 and im wondering do i need to buy garmin smartband or smartwatch to get all good for cycling? Like if smartwatch will provide sleep data and daily steps does it  impact suggested training or resting time on  edge 1040? If a watch is must have what will be best one to get? I dont want to spend ton of $$$ for it?

  • While Garmin Connect will sync up certain data between a garmin smart watch & edge, I don't think the two data sets will be correlated.

  • I meant , will a daily steps, HR and sleep data and body bartery from watch have some impact of suggested workouts and rest time after ride/workouts on edge 1040?

  • Hi Bartek,

Yes it should, but your Garmin watch has to support the "Physio True up" feature.

    Cheers,

    Fabrice

  • So will venu sq will be good for that or what you suggest to choose?

  • If you do other sports besides cycling (running/trekking) look for a Forrunner/Fenix.
Otherwise, the Venu family is good (I own a Venu2).

  • I have the Venu SQ and Edge 1040.  So far, the only useful thing that the watch provides is a resting heart rate to allow the Edge 1040 to calculate Fitness Age.  There is a long thread about calculating Fitness Age.  Supposedly, you can set a resting heart rate on the Edge, but then the Edge doesn't use it for calculating Fitness Age - instead, it seems to use average heart rate from your rides, which is way too high, and causes your Fitness Age to be elevated.

Obviously, Fitness Age is a rather obscure and unimportant part of ranking your overall riding ability.  So you have to decide whether getting a Garmin smart watch is worth the cost.  And you will need to wear the watch pretty much all the time to get the sleep data, resting heart rate, etc.  I only take mine off when I ride, and when I shower.  Finally, my Venu SQ measures my sleep too high.  If I'm laying around reading or playing with my tablet during sleep hours, it usually counts that as sleep time.
