Low Intensity Minutes

I've been cycling with my Forerunner 245 for a couple years, and it has been reliably recording my Intensity Minutes metric to Garmin Connect (Android and web apps). Here's an example of a ride from last weekend - I rode for 4 hours, some of which was considered "vigorous" (2x Intensity Minutes credit), and earned 6.8 hours of Intensity Minutes:

I just bought an Edge 1040, and did my first ride with it a few days later. I rode for 1.5 hours, with a similar heart rate profile, but only got credit for 6 minutes of Intensity Minutes:

Low Intensity Minutes

In the first example, the Forerunner was tracking everything. In the second example, I was using the Edge to track the cycling activity, and using the Forerunner to broadcast my heart rate to the Edge.

The heart rate graph for the second ride looks correct; it just seems that the Intensity Minutes calculation is wrong. The Edge is the obvious new variable in my configuration, so I suspect that it is probably the thing that's affecting the Intensity Minutes result - or, perhaps more specifically, it's my ignorance of how to use the Edge that caused the issue.

  • Is there something I can do with my Edge 1040 configuration to yield proper the Intensity Minutes value from my rides?

Thanks!

  • I just took my first ride after installing the 14.20 firmware and Intensity Minutes is working now.

From reading the release notes, I see that this feature was added to the Edge 1040 at 14.20.

In addition to calculating and reporting Intensity Minutes to Garmin Connect, the new Edge 1040 UI now has a... glance?... whatever the little widgets on the home screen are called... for Intensity Minutes. You have to add it explicitly, but it's there.
