Wishlist to Garmin - An opportunity to quickly zoom out (e.g 10 fold) during navigation, to get a better overview

It will be a cool feature if you e.g. by a software button in the navigation window, have the ability with a single press, to be able to quickly zoom out (e.g. 50:1 -> 500:1) from the current window and its map size ratio. And subsequently zoom in again with the same button, to the previous map ratio, during the ride. It will give a good overview of the route, and an extra check that shows you that you are on the right track.

  • would be a welcome add for me to!

  • Yes! Just like is already implemented in the elevation screen. I think of this every time I use navigation.

  • I really like the "show whole route" toggle  feature in the elevation screen but the map screen is already overburdened with buttons that don't go away ( - / hand / + / north ) so the interface would have to be something that didn't add yet more buttons. Currently the pinch zoom works ok for me or a few quick taps of the - / +

  • ah so there is allready something i did not know of.

i guess i'm missing something. just tried to look for the "show whole route" feature mentioned but did not find it.

can you show where this can be found? thanks in advance!

  • What pinch and zoom option are you talking about exactly?  mine doesnt do that

  • What pinch and zoom option are you talking about exactly?

Garmin seems to want to keep some features secret, at least they are not mentioned at all in the owners manual.

If you swipe to the map screen (during an activity) you will see symbols across the top, - / + for zooming in and out and the Hand, tap the hand and you enter "pan" mode, the hand changes to a circle / bullseye symbol. With one finger you can pan the map up / down & Left / Right but with two fingers (or thumb & finger) you can zoom by pinching in & pinch out. To exit pan mode (return to normal mode) tap the black square with the arrow.

In pan mode you can also drop location pins. For the last 10 years I have had button driven garmins so the touch interface is new to me on my new 1040 so I have not got he hang of all the touch features. Some others on the map include changing track up / north up by taping the red compass arrow and getting a list of calculated turns (if Turn Guidance is enabled) by tapping in the "Guide Text" top line area and can then step through views of each turn, might be useful?

  • Yes, I always think about having this functionality when riding...
