Better Visibility on Map Screen -Feature Request

After a several year break from Garmin (first using a Wahoo, then a Hammerhead Karoo 2) I’m back to Garmin with the Edge 1040 and I’m loving it! I have a Fr955 and having everything sync up, eliminating the need for an Apple Watch and/or Whoop band is awesome! So first off thanks to the Garmin team for continuing to help push things forward.

One change I would like to see and I’m hoping others will agree and can upvote or comment here is the visibility of the map, especially when navigating. I race Road, Gravel, and MTB. I find that on the road and really easy gravel the map screen is easy enough to look down long enough to see where you are and what’s ahead, but when riding rougher gravel, higher speed gravel, or MTB in general it is extremely hard to see where you are on the screen and what’s coming up next. I think this is caused a lack in contrast between roads/trails that matter compared to everything else as well as the triangle indicator representing where I am being so small and also a lack of contrast. I’ve added some images of a Wahoo Roam where you can see the navigation path is extremely visible both by contrast and size. I’ve also added an image of the Karoo 2 which has an even larger indicator of your current position and they also make your current route (where you’ve been and where you’re going) drastically stand out simply by using more extreme contrast. I hope this is something we can have changed in the next update.

Note, I am 34 and don’t need perscription glasses, nor am I color blind, sight is totally normal.

  • While I agree that the device should have better map and navigation visibility out of the box, I really don't understand why people downvote you for providing a welcome interim fix...

I also come from Wahoo and I bought an 840 first. I really had problems with navigation so I moved to the 1040. But compared with my tiny small Bolt it is still hard even the screen is much bigger.

  • I have not been on garmin for ages - the route navigation is bad compare to Karoo. Karoo however has the worst battery life out of them all!!!

  • I've had mine for about four months now and I've put it on Gumtree I'm getting rid of it the navigation is absolutely useless  for mountain bikers I think hammerhead Karoo are about to release a Karoo 3 some time next year so I'm gonna hold out for one of those and see how I get on with that failing that komoot navigation works perfectly so my small Android phone and use komoot

  • We are quickly approaching another cycling season in the northern hemisphere. I thought I would bump this again and see if we can get any reply from Garmin.

  • Don't hold your breath they're not bothered about improving their product I've given up with them got rid of my garment last week

  • the navigation is absolutely useless  for mountain bikers

I only do mountainbiking and I cannot confirm. But of course I do not turn by turn in the mountains but simply follow the loaded GPX track with off course warning enabled. I can clearly see where I have to go. I have and had no problems with the mapscreen since Edge 800 many years ago…
