Brand New 1040 Solar- solar function not working

Hi,

First ride on a brand new Garmin Edge 1040 Solar. Great product, but the solar harvesting function appears not to be working.

RIDE CONDITIONS:  Austin, TX  103 degrees, midday and very sunny.  Ride duration 60 minutes.  Battery charge was NOT at 100%

POST RIDE: it harvested nothing. Solar intensity showed 0%, odd seeing that its was hot and sunny.

Am I doing something incorrectly?

Thanks in advance.

  • Has happened to me a few times. Rebooting the device has always fixed it. Also get the 1040 solar on the latest firmware, beta or official release your call. I have the latest beta.

  • Ran an update last night.  The only thing suggested was updating the U.S. Maps. Will try and see if it works tonight.  But all the firmware is up to date.

  • If you run some tests, you will find out that the solar harvesting cuts out at about 48/50 degrees and then will restart when cooled off (difficult to say but about 20 degrees), I tested this several times, when I state 48/50 degrees, that is direct sun light, this must be a safe cut off? You will also notice that when you sleep device, its will state that solar harvesting has temporarily stop until device cools, moreover, when you sleep the unit, the intensity icon (star) and % comes up briefly (with the correct number %)….even though you are no gaining charge, it still shows as an intensity... I think that the sun intensity and temperature are seen as two different aspects. Hope this makes some sense.  This could be a bug or a safety feature?

The heat is the issue not the solar?

Lastly sometimes stopping the activity and starting again will show the correct changing intensity. I suggest trying this:

1, Start activity....no solar showing, stop and start a new activity... see intensity before you get going.

  • Thanks.  I assume you mean 48/50 Celsius?  And if this is accurate you why is Garmin selling a solar harvesting device that cuts off? I didn't see anything on their site where it says don't buy this is if you live in the south where it is hot.

  • Yes, Celsius, this is my own testing, not the most scientific but still suggested that there is a temp cut off? Yes not the best if in a hot country. I am having issues and based in UK not exactly seen a hot…..

  • Having the same issue in Vancouver Canada but not during rides - rather, every time I turn it off after a ride outdoor or indoor I get a message indicating that solar charging is temporarily disabled and when it cools it will restart Solar charging. However: every time I’ve placed the unit in the sun while off or in sleep mode in order to charge, whenever I turn it back on it has lost battery life, not gained. Also this is my second unit with the same issue. So, what, apparently heat stops it from charging???? So much for sitting in the window (in CANADA FFS) and charging.

  • Tak jest również dla mnie.
