Questions and suggestions to improve Workout Screen experience

The Garmin 1040 hardware is wonderful, but right now the workout screen ruins the experience.

1. Allow us to remove/edit the Step Distance data field. Perhaps this is something coming from the running world, never heard of any cyclist using it.

2. Provide us with a 'what is remaining of the workout view' instead of this zoomed in comparission view which is not that useful but just a visual replication of what the primary power target is shown. Instead I am missing a complete view of the workout indicating how far into the workout I am and I can see what is remaining, That way I can make better routing choices, finding a road that fits to coming intervals, anticipating the upcoming suffering.

3. I am missing just simple Target Power data field?

4. For me it is a bit weird that the workout pauses before an interval set and I have to press the lap timer button to continue. This means I have to take my hands off the handlebar which can be dangerous due to crosswind, speed and move my focus off road, traffic. Just let me do the workout, if I need to pause a workout then I will do this myself at the right time for me.

5. It seems that only a custom workout gets a next interval popup screen. However for me the popup screen is shown just before the interval begins and gives little time to prepare ( selecting the right gear or judging if the upcoming road is appropriate for this interval. I might need to pause and wait for clear road ). The popup should be shown 10s before interval start and the popup should not take that much screen estate. I almost found myself riding in the blind ( could not see watt data field ) due to doing short burst intervals and the popup did cover half the screen, including my 3s watt data field

Now I am new to the Garmin 1040 and perhaps there are settings unknown to me that can fix some of these issues. The hardware of the 1040 is great and most of the software is working really well. It just the workout screen that are miles off, at leat for me..

  • I have had the same experience. I think in general more customization for this workout screen is necessary. As it stands, I will not be using this page for workouts. I will create a new data page for workouts.

  • Strange enough , edge 130 plus displays all the steps from the workout , not just the first (both have same workout loaded)

  • Indeed, step distance is useless and should be customisable.

target power, actual power/mena power,Time remaining should have bigger font

  • This was designed by a programer that is not a cyclist , that never ride in his life

every damn program (zwift, traineroads, has same block design ) but noooo, Garmin has to design it from the scratch, hey lets put some small numbers on this big screen..

  • Hopefully this thread will catch their attention

I swear, this exactly was my thought!

In general - I hate layout of this field: too much unused space and - at same time - crucial information displayed with way too small font! When you're crushing an interval being at or beyond your limits all the data should be easy to read, just in your face.

    Best regards,

  • IRT #4.

If you are doing intervals in traffic, you should probably reconsider where you do your workouts. Is your device Pausing or is it 'Rest until Lap button press'? I personally think it's best to have the lap press before intervals that the recovery duration isn't overly important. Allows me to ensure I'm in a locations that will allow me to complete my next interval in a safe manner with limited disruptions. I don't want the next interval to start 200m before a stop sign....

  • I think it is 'Rest until Lap button press'

I don't disagree, but I can anticipate this myself and I do not need the device to do that for every interval set. I can see if a stop sign is approaching and if this will interfere with what is coming next.

And if you are doing an interval set of burst interval going from 40% ftp to 130-150% ftp this becomes very annoying. Having to lift your hand from handlebar, press the lap button and then immediately go from 40% to 130% for that first short burst interval, that is not practical. The next burst intervals in that set is fine, it is only for a start of an interval set.
